One wonders now how it was that some instinct did not warn me that one of those khaki dots jumping out of the trenches was the cousin who stayed with us in London. I'm wondering what this mystery of the German Chancellor is all about some peace proposals, I suppose which are sure to prove bombastic and unacceptable. It seems to us out here as though the war must go on forever.
The friends may indeed grow into lovers, and then some sort of solution, by divorce or intrigue scarcely however a desirable kind of solution becomes possible. But we are here taking the highest ground and assuming that honourable feeling, domestic affection, or a stern sense of moral duty, renders such solution unacceptable.
The council anticipated that the Communion service would prove unacceptable to many of the clergy, and their anticipations were fulfilled, though, as shall be seen, they adopted a novel method of allaying the trouble.
The test, however, which he now put forward was whether or not the proposals satisfied Ulster: and he fixed upon the time-limit of six years as being wholly unacceptable.
In Norway they afterwards complained, especially the Radicals, of that »Massive instrument.» To this State Secretary MICHELSEN sharply replied, that »Mr BLEHR'S explanation was only the explanation of the Norwegian government on the subject of the Communiqué.» Other explanations in the Storthing of the divergencies of opinions on this point are to all intents unacceptable.
Forty years later, after the Pyrrhine war, all Lucania fell under the rising power of Rome, a change that was by no means unacceptable to the Greek cities, which were groaning under the rude tyranny of the Samnites. A Latin colony was now planted at Paestum, to form a convenient centre whence the neighbouring district could be kept in order and peaceably developed according to Roman ideas.
The 'expert' immediately found the first fault: the downlead from the antenna had a bend in it of more than 45 degrees which was quite unacceptable. Secondly, the ground connection to the central heating radiator was no good because it was winter and the radiator was hot so it presented a very high resistance! It must be soldered, he said, to a cold water tap.
The next day saw the party bound for Falmouth, where they arrived under a beautiful moon, with the sea smooth as glass not an unacceptable change from the rolling swell of the first part of the little voyage. Something unexpected and unwelcome had happened before the close of the excursion, while the French coast which the Queen had hailed with so much pleasure was still full in sight.
In other words we have to expect the pain of our relationships and accept the responsibility of them for the sake of the glory in them that may be revealed later. We are to accept the unacceptable in ourselves and in others, because on the cross Christ accepted the unacceptable in all men. This is what produced the Cross.
He had offered up his life to this land to atone for a life taken when she when she first looked up with eyes of gratitude, eyes that haunted him. Was it, then, unacceptable? Was it so that he must turn his back upon this long, heart-breaking but beloved work, this panacea for his soul, without which he could not pay the price of blood?
