The debates in full Convention were animated, but somewhat unreal by comparison. Lord Midleton's motion had been dropped, by consent, for a series of resolutions tabled by Lord MacDonnell which were in substance an acceptance of Government's proposal. But neither in the private councils nor in the public debates had we Redmond's presence.
The Government to establish tolls and regulate the operation of the line, Whitney to be the sole Owner and receive a salary of four thousand dollars per year for managing it. The proposition was debated for days in the Senate and then was tabled on a vote of twenty-seven to twenty-one. The opposition dwelt largely on the length of time Whitney would necessarily require.
The wine circulated freely, and by and by Fyall indulged in some remarkable stories of his youth, for he was the only speaker, which I found some difficulty in swallowing, until at length, on one thumper being tabled, involving an impossibility, and utterly indigestible, I involuntarily exclaimed, "by Jupiter!"
The Philippine Commission has heretofore invariably tabled the acts designed to accomplish this end, but that body has now been "Filipinized" and its future attitude on this very important question is therefore in doubt. Hardly had the legislative session opened in October, 1913, when the assembly again passed the same old bill.
Several flattering offers to act as tutor or companion to rich men's sons came his way, and were declined in polite and gracious language; and once a suggestion that he wed a woman of wealth was tabled in a manner not quite so gracious. In passing, it is well to state that all of Addison's relations with women seem to have occupied a lofty plane of chivalry.
She called attention to the fact that time was passing, and moved that the matter be tabled, and the Society proceed with the programme for the day. Fiercer discussion ensued at this. "Business before pleasure," said a sententious member. "What's a programme to a matter concerning the Constitution itself?" The sponsor for the motion grew sarcastic. It developed later she was on the programme.
"I yield to the senator from Dixie," he answered. The spotlight shifted as Harding got slowly to his feet, making a white halo of his hair. He did not look at Edmonds, but turned to face Lesseur. "Mr. Chairman," he said, "I move that Resolution 1843 be tabled!" "Second!" The light shifted to another man, but Edmonds had no time to see who it was as he stood staring open-mouthed at Harding.
Your mother is tabled at a religious house at Salisbury." "I know. I landed at Southampton and have seen her." "And Dennet," Stephen added with a short laugh, "she could not wait for you." "No, verily. Did I not wot well that she cared not a fico for me? I hoped when I made off that thou wouldst be the winner, Steve, and I am right glad thou art, man."
A few "nays" succeeded the great chorus of "ayes," and the motion of Coventry for Jetson was declared tabled. "Any further action?" demanded the chair. "Move we adjourn!" called Farley. The motion was put and carried without dissent Then, amid the greatest jollity, the meeting was declared adjourned.
Three measures were introduced a bill for Presidential and Municipal suffrage, a bill giving women a vote in local option elections and the amendment resolution. The two bills were fought with great determination. The first was defeated in the Senate by 19 noes, 13 ayes; in the House by 149 noes, 85 ayes. The Excise bill was tabled in the Senate, rejected in the House by 139 noes, 69 ayes.
