Every legal holiday was observed in true Dry Lake manner, to the tune of violins and the swish-swish of slippered feet upon a more-or-less polished floor. The Glorious Fourth, however, was celebrated with more elaborate amusements. On that day men met, organized and played a matched game of ball with much shouting and great gusto, and with an umpire who aimed to please.

Jessie never, to the end of her life, could forget the morning that letter reached them. It was a wet, dark November morning, and she had been lying awake for a long time listening to the patter-patter, swish-swish of the rain pouring against her window.

"I did want that rabbit to get off," she sighed out; "I've been watching it. Thank you!" He looked at her. "My goodness!" was all he said. Noel's hands flew up to her cheeks. "Yes, I know; is my nose very red?" "No; you're as lovely as Ruth, if she was lovely." Swish-swish!

"A very observing shoemaker," commented the other with a slight sneer. "You mean the the half split cover?" "Swish-swish; whish-swish," sounded from the rear room. "Excuse me," said Bertram, who had not ceased from his pretended work. "I have to get a piece of leather."

There was no new sensation in it now; just steady, rather dreamy work, to keep her place in the row, to the swish-swish of the cutter and the call of the driver to his horses at the turns; with continual little pauses, to straighten and rest her back a moment, and shake her head free from the flies, or suck her finger, sore from the constant pushing of the straw ends under.

For a few moments after getting on deck he thought he had the ship to himself. One side of the deck was clean and wet; on the other side the men were slowly moving the scrubbing-brushes backward and forward, with a drowsy swish-swish. As he walked up the deck, he saw there was one passenger who had been earlier than himself.

The swish-swish of a lame foot approached down the stone tiling with the tapping, soft and dull, of a rubber-tipped walking-stick. He paused by the pillar, as I knew he would, and I busied myself with an added rush and hurry, an added irritating noise of spoons flung down. He waited patiently, shyly. I didn't look up, but I knew his face was half smiling and suppliant.
