There was to be no special day set aside for meetings. A meeting might be called at any time at the united request of three members. The sole object of the club was to extend a helping hand to the young women who were making praiseworthy efforts to put themselves through college. The foremost duty of the society would be to ascertain the names of these girls and offer them pecuniary assistance.

Washington Irving tried to welcome Dickens, but failed in the attempt, while Dickens was as voluble as he was gifted. Probably the very surroundings of sympathetic admirers unnerved both Washington and Irving, although there are some men who can never "speak on their legs," as the saying goes, in any society.

This verisimilitude, it should be observed, is not only difficult to attain: it seems not to be easy even to recognise. Again, these many people must be somewhat unimaginative. But that is not the point of the matter. The point is that Dickens depicts no "state of society" that ever existed, except in the Dickensium Sidus.

My own amateur and humble experiences here recorded have added much to my own understanding of the problems of both manager and worker. Can they add even a fraction to the understanding of anyone else?

No indeed, your modern scientific cracksman keeps abreast of the times in his field better than you imagine. Our only protection is that fortunately science always keeps several laps ahead of him in the race and besides, we have organized society to meet all such perils. It may be that the very cleverness of the fellow will be his own undoing.

"Another circumstance, demanding special observation in reference to the commencement of the great work at Tahiti, is that, discouraged by so many years of fruitless toil, the directors of the Society entertained serious thoughts of abandoning the mission altogether. A few undeviating friends of that field of missionary enterprise, however, opposed the measure."

"Has she wrinkles? Lines?" "Not one. Have we grown old since she left us? It's not so many years ago?" "Oh, I know. But after all she went through.... How was she dressed?" "What are her favorite colors?" "Who makes her gowns?" "Has she as much elegance and style as ever?" "Did she get her mother's jewels? Did she wear them in Berlin?" "Is she in Society there?
