"Poor man!" said I. "Learn that in those very days, when it shall be with the making of things as with the carter in the cart, that there he sitteth and shaketh the reins and the horse draweth and the cart goeth; in those days, I tell thee, many men shall be as poor and wretched always, year by year, as they are with thee when there is famine in the land; nor shall any have plenty and surety of livelihood save those that shall sit by and look on while others labour; and these, I tell thee, shall be a many, so that they shall see to the making of all laws, and in their hands shall be all power, and the labourers shall think that they cannot do without these men that live by robbing them, and shall praise them and wellnigh pray to them as ye pray to the saints, and the best worshipped man in the land shall be he who by forestalling and regrating hath gotten to him the most money."

So thought the enemies of the witnesses while their dead bodies lay unburied. "He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision." At the beginning of that gloomy period the woman fled.

Here are some of the verses selected: 2 Chronicles xiv. 2: "And Asa did that which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord" Asa and his bride Hepzibah sitting up proudly in the congregation to listen. Proverbs xxiv. 23: "Her husband is known in the gates when he sitteth among the elders of the land."

From His lips he wrote messages of counsel and warning to the angels, or Bishops, of the Seven Churches of Asia Minor; and then came a succession of wonderful visions, each opening with the Church in Heaven and in earth constantly glorifying Him that sitteth on the Throne, and the Lamb, for ever and ever; but going on to show the crimes in the world beneath, and the judgments one after another poured out by the Angels; the true remnant of the Church persecuted; and the world partly curbed by, partly corrupting, the visible Church; then the destruction of the wicked world, under the type of Babylon; the last judgment; the eternal punishment of the sinful; the final union of Christ and His Church; and the eternal blessedness of the faithful in the heavenly Jerusalem, with the Tree of Life restored.

For this did I once see, and did not tire of weeping in beholding it. Like the sun will also Zarathustra go down: now sitteth he here and waiteth, old broken tables around him, and also new tables half-written. Behold, here is a new table; but where are my brethren who will carry it with me to the valley and into hearts of flesh?

Remember his great words about that moral resurrection and ascension of our wills, our hearts, our characters, our actions. And what are those heavenly places? And what is our duty in them? Let St Paul himself answer. "If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God." And what are they?

Let drops of the spirit To join them now flow; Life to the living Naught else can bestow. Drain it off quickly Before it exhales; Save when 'tis glowing, The draught naught avails. See, he sitteth on his mat Sitteth there upright, With the grace with which he sat While he saw the light.

True, there may seem a strange contrast between the present condition of the Lord who 'was received up into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God, and that of the servants wandering through the world on His business; but the contrast is harmonised by the next words, 'the Lord also working with them. Yes, He has gone up to sit at the right hand of God.

Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity. The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.

The libraries, well stored with reverend tomes, have been pillaged, and their contents cast to the flames; and thus long laboured manuscript, the fruit of years of patient industry, with gloriously illuminated missal, are irrecoverably lost. The large infirmary no longer receiveth the sick; in the locutory sitteth no more the guest.
