Thus the Indian and his medicine easily agreed with each other in these spiritual conversations which thing gave the Fire Eater added respect for the keeper of his body and his shadow-self. Far into the night the preoccupied Indian leaned against his resting-mat watching the little flames leaping from the split sticks as his youngest squaw laid them on the fire.
He was thinking of what his Shadow-Self had said on this very subject "A book or poem, to be great, and keep its greatness hereafter, must be judged by the natural instinct of PEOPLES. This world-wide decision has never yet been, and never will be, hastened by any amount of written criticism, it is the responsive beat of the enormous Pulse of Life that thrills through all mankind, high and low, gentle and simple, its great throbs are slow and solemnly measured, yet if once it answers to a Poet's touch, that Poet's name is made glorious forever!"
And he took up from a side-table a quaint small quarto, bound is a very superb imitation of old embossed leather, which Alwyn, beholding, was at once struck by the resemblance it bore to the elaborate designs that had adorned the covers of the papyrus volumes possessed by his Shadow-Self, Sahluma! "This is very sumptuous!" he said with a dreamy smile "It looks quite antique!"
Talk to it, ask of it all manner of questions, tell it the secrets of your shadow-self, and it will take you through battle so fast that no arrow or bullet can hit you. It will steal you away from the spirits which haunt the night. It will whisper to you concerning the intentions of the women, and your enemies, and it will make you wise in the council when you are older.
V. "The Kites and the Crows" The Bat had passed the boy stage. He was a Chis-chis-chash warrior now, of agile body and eager mind. No man's medicine looked more sharply after his physical form and shadow-self than did the Bat's; no young man was quicker in the surround; no war-pony could scrabble to the lariat ahead of his in the races.
When the warriors returned in small parties to their camp for refreshment they saw the dead body of Owl Bear he who had fallen outside the barricade of the Yellow-Eyes. The "Fire Eater" had brought it in during the night having approached and carried it away drawing the fire of the rifle but saving the hair and shadow-self of his brother.
Then her glance rested on Lloyd's picture, and for once the make-believe companionship of Lloyd's shadow-self brought a comfort as deep as if her real self had spoken. She held out her arms to it, whispering brokenly: "Oh, you understand how hard it is, don't you, dear? You're the only one in the world who does, because you had to give up all this, too."
She repeated it drowsily, peering out from under her umbrella at the swaying shadows, till something the lines suggested made her sit up, wide awake. "Why, I can take you for my chum, of course," she thought. "Your shadow-self. Then it won't make any difference whether Miss Haughtiness Hurst talks to me or not, You'll understand and sympathize with me."
