The arrival at Jamaica of the two vessels under the command of Salcedo had caused a joyful reverse in the situation of Columbus. La Gina is the beginning of the branch line which extends through monotonous woodland to San Francisco de Macoris. The town sustains two churches, one on the outskirts, and another with a peculiar square tower, on the plaza. The other town of the province is Salcedo, formerly called Juana Nunez, 7 miles east of Moca in a rich cacao district.
