He left the assembly, with visible marks of his displeasure: he required the primate instantly to surrender the honours and castles of Eye and Berkham: the bishops were terrified, and expected still farther effects of his resentment. Hist. Quad. p. 34. Quad. p. 37. Hoveden, p. 493.
I did not tell her about the bonfire which we had in the back quad after supper, because I am sure she would have thought that either I was lying or that most of the men in St. Cuthbert's were a set of lunatics. Two or three dons, who could appreciate festivities, danced round the bonfire quite happily, and evidently enjoyed themselves.
On the last day of July a few of us met together in Gibson's rooms, those neat, white rooms in Balliol that overlook St Giles. Naymier, the Pole, was certain that Armageddon was coming. He proved it conclusively in the Quad with the aid of large maps and a dissertation on potatoes. He also showed us the probable course of the war. We lived in strained excitement. Things were too big to grasp.
For to my horror I was stopped by his mother, whom I subsequently learned to love and honour above most people, and actually kissed while walking in the open quad strutting like a peacock, I suppose, for I remember feeling as if the bottom had suddenly fallen out of the earth.
I often wonder, when I sit here in Berkeley's window-seat, and look across the quad to the carved pinnacles on the Founder's Tower there, whether any of us can ever hope to leave behind to our successors any legacy at all comparable to the one left us by those nameless old mediaeval masons.
We had done something at last which was worth a bonfire, and a bonfire with no one to dance round it has never yet been lighted in an Oxford quad. The Bradder thought that our supper had gone off very well, although he had seen one of his fellow-dons treated too affectionately, and had rescued him.
While walking through the College quad, he was half stupefied by his confusion, and was aware that such was his condition. But going out under the gate he paused for a moment and shook himself. He must at any rate summon his own powers to his aid at the moment and resolve what he would do. However bad all this might be, there was a better course and a worse.
Falloden, of course, was the leader insolent brute! The lad, quivering once more with rage and humiliation, seemed to feel again Falloden's iron grip upon his shoulders to remember the indignity of his forced descent into the quad the laughter of his captors. Then he recollected throwing the water and Robertson's spring upon him If she had seen it!
"Sit down there on the polar side of that Houston quad and if you are any account, I'll give you a job at seventy dollars per month." Now a "Quad" is an instrument whereby four messages are going over the same wire at the same time. The mechanism of the machine is different in every respect from the old relay, key and sounder, used on the railroad wires.
