Careful observation of clinical cases has, for example, shown that a lesion in the visual center of the brain, that is, the part of the brain to which the fibers of the optic nerve run, induces the disappearance of both sight and visual imagery. Psychology and physiology have been busily engaged in discovering these correlations.
And this nerve of sense which perceives the different articles which compose the blood, must at least be conceived to be as fine and subtile an organ, as the optic or auditory nerve, which perceive light or sound. See Sect. But in nothing is this nice action of the extremities of the blood-vessels so wonderful, as in the production of contagious matter.
From here a narrow duct, called "the aqueduct of Sylvius," passes through the corpus quadrigeminum to the third cerebral ventricle, which lies between the two optic thalami; and this in turn is connected with the pairs of lateral ventricles which lie to the right and left in the large hemispheres. Thus all the cavities of the central marrow are directly interconnected.
"Parson, actor, young sinner, old saint I ask you frankly, girls, on your word of honor, was there ever more than one man in ten went through your hands who didn't turn out soft somewhere before you were through with him? Mawking about your 'sweet eyes' while you're wrecking your optic nerves trying to decipher the dose on a poison bottle!
M. de Buffon in making this experiment observed, that the red edge of the silk was not only deeper coloured than the original silk; but, on his retreating a little from it, it became oblong, and at length divided into two, which must have been owing to his observing it either before or behind the point of intersection of the two optic axises.
Thus, when a feeling resulting from a disturbance in the optic nerve is interpreted as one of external light vaguely felt to be acting on the eye, or one resulting from some action set up in the auditory fibre as a sensation of external sound vaguely felt to be entering the ear, we see that the error of localization is a consequence of the other error already characterized.
When I recovered, I found myself in a prison-cell, with a bandage over my damaged optic, and a physician feeling my pulse. "Ah!" said I, looking around, "I am in limbo, I see. Well, I do not fear the result. But, doctor, am I seriously injured am I likely to kick the bucket?" "Not at all," was the doctor's encouraging reply "but you have lost the sight of your eye."
I saw nothing more of my friend of the false brown optic that evening, except that I observed his bloodshot eye of the flesh fixed scathingly upon me from a remote corner of the great dining-room, where he appeared to be dining mostly off a large bottle of champagne.
"And, Peggy, you must come too. Maybe I can find one of those Optic books, and we'll be young again." "Just for old time's sake," she said impulsively. "You'll stay for luncheon, too." "I'll have to be at the no, I won't, either. Do you know, I was thinking I had to be at the bank at twelve-thirty to let Mr. Perkins go out for something to eat?
As Christmas was at hand, the women were all half crazy about presents, and while good Doctors James and Kate were doing all in their power to cure the nervous affections of their patients, they would thwart the treatment by sitting in the parlor with the thermometer at seventy-two degrees, embroidering all kinds of fancy patterns, some on muslin, some on satin, and some with colored worsteds on canvas, inhaling the poisonous dyes, straining the optic nerves, counting threads and stitches, hour after hour, until utterly exhausted.
