It became at last unreasonable to suppose that anything in the world would ever happen to Almayer and Nina. Then follows that third generation to which Schlegel himself belongs, and which is more generally known in literary history as the era of the Romantic school a school answering both in chronology, and in many points of character also, to what we call the Lake school in England. Coleridge, Wordsworth, and Southey, are contemporaries of Tieck, Novalis, and the Schlegels.
The thoughtful Novalis, whose meditations are so rich in reflections on the religious nature of man, well said: “Prayer is to religion what thought is to philosophy. To pray is to make religion. The religious sense prays with like necessity that the reason thinks.” Whatever the form of the prayer, it has direct or indirect relation to the accomplishment of a wish.
Men like Behmen, Novalis, and Fourier, who can soar into the inner cloud-world of man's spirit, even though they lose their way there, dazzled by excess of wonder men who, like Wordsworth, can give utterance to such subtle anthropologic wisdom as the "Ode on the Intimations of Immortality," will for that very reason most humbly and patiently "consider the lilies of the field, how they grow."

The wonderful in it is expressly treated as fiction and enthusiastic dreaming:" and yet, what is also characteristic, Novalis soon returned to this book, and it remained his favorite reading to the end of his life. What distinguishes Goethe for French and English readers, is a property which he shares with his nation, a habitual reference to interior truth.
