There was a remarkable peculiarity about the literary debutant who signed himself "Nobilitas:" he not only put old words to a new sense, but he used words which had never, among the general run of writers, been used before. This was especially remarkable in the application of hard names to authors.

But towards the end of the Republican period the individual had free play; at no time in ancient history do we meet with so many various and interesting kinds of individuality, even among the nobilitas itself.

Opera, tom. l. p. 93.

They anxiously study the defence of their country and their liberty; for these they fight, for these they undergo hardships, and for these willingly sacrifice their lives; they esteem it a disgrace to die in bed, an honour to die in the field of battle; using the poet's expressions, "Procul hinc avertite pacem, Nobilitas cum pace perit."

The term nobilitas implied that some one of a man's ancestors had filled a curule magistracy, and it also implied the possession of wealth. Theoretically it would seem that the nobiles were very numerous, since so many people can ordinarily boast of an illustrious ancestor; but practically the class was not so large as we might expect.

SIR, Understanding that my friend, Mr. , proprietor of "The Asinaeum," allows the very distinguished writer whom you have introduced to the literary world, and who signs himself "Nobilitas," only five shillings an article, I beg, through you, to tender him double that sum. The article required will be of an ordinary length. I am, sir, etc.,

At least, I assume that even by that time your name will be honourably known, as it will be if you work hard. You must never forget that `Virtus vera nobilitas' is the noble motto of your own college." "Well, I will work at any rate," said Julian; "indeed I must." "But may I ask why you have determined on going up as sizar?" "Oh yes, sir.

The distinction of Patrician and Plebeian was secondary, after the Gracchi to that of Nobilitas, yet it was rare to find a patrician gens the families of which had not enjoyed the highest honors many times over.
