Many muskegs west of Edmonton have been formed by beavers damming the natural drainage of a small river for so many centuries that the silt and humus washed down from the mountains have formed a surface of deep black muck. Like many lowland dwellers, the Overlanders had thought of a pass as a door opening through a rock wall.

In the morning an endless succession of small creeks was passed, screened by deep valleys which fell in from hills and muskegs to the south, and at noon, jaded with slow travel, we reached Athabasca Landing. A long hill leads down to the flat, and from its brow we had a striking view of the village below and of the noble river, which much resembles the Saskatchewan, minus its prairies.

They were up at sunrise the next day, and started soon afterward on a march that led them through tangled pine bush, the tall grass of natural swamp prairies, rotting muskegs, and over stony hill-slopes. It was repeated with no great variation for several weeks, except that now and then they swam or ferried themselves on logs over very cold and rapid rivers.

It has been my steadfast object ever since I became an outcast; I've schemed and cheated to gain it, besides risking my life often in desolate muskegs and the arctic frost. Now, I ask you to make it possible and you cannot refuse." Challoner was silent for a minute or two, while Clarke smoked impassively.

He sensed something provocative and challenging in her voice, but he would not play up. "I wonder " he said quietly. "In a way, the proper line's to go to sleep again." "Sometimes one dreams! I expect you dream about locomotives breaking through trestles and dump-cars plunging into muskegs?" He laughed. "They're things I know, and safe to dream about.

Here he is a lord of his lonely watery domain, more independent and care-free than you are peace to his aged bones! Another night coming through the muskegs we lost ourselves.

Questioned as to the nature of the country westward, Tecumseh took a roll of elm-bark and with the point of his scalping-knife traced on its white inner surface the features of the region hills, forests, trails, rivers, muskegs and clearings. That night, after Tecumseh's return, Brock again held council with his staff, proposing an attack on Detroit.

The soil's good alluvial, like the gumbo on the Manitoba plains, and would grow heavy crops if one could keep out the water. Well, we have seen small homesteaders draining Canadian muskegs, a long haul from a railroad, while we have a good market for all farming truck in two hours' ride. The proposition, however, needs some thought. It might cost me all I've got." Jake's eyes twinkled.

At that point the forest has already begun to dwindle towards the Land of Little Sticks, so that often miles and miles of open muskegs will intervene between groups of the stunted trees. Jim and I found ourselves a little over waist deep in luxuriant and tangled grasses that impeded and clogged our every footstep.

The hunters described the inland country as a wilderness of sand-hills, surrounded by quaking-bogs, muskegs and soft meadows.
