They just fit this, and they've been running in my head ever since I woke up: "'All night long my heart has cried For the starry moors And the mountain's ragged flank And the plunge of oars. 'Oh, to feel the Wind grow strong Where the Trail leaps down. I could never learn the way And wisdom of the town.

George and Amory freed themselves and sprang to their feet their eyes were drawn to a glory of light shining over the low parapet which surrounded the terrace. "Look," cried St. George victoriously, "the moon!" From the sea the moon was momently growing, like a giant bubble, and a bright path had issued to the mountain's foot.

He could see the light from the cabin window shining like a star. Behind him lay the darker forest of the Hollow, and beyond, like a great sentinel, was the round, treeless form of Dewey Bald. From where he stood, he could even see clearly against the sky the profile of the mountain's shoulder, and the ledge at Sammy's Lookout.

The boy glared round at his victors, now all grouped at the door. "You beasly girls," he said. That is why "Greenways" should have hidden its shamed head in one of the mountain's tender mists instead of gaily smiling out at the world that morning.

We had to make our way up the mountain's side in the face of this tempest. At times more than a dozen animals were yoked to our diligence, horses, oxen, and beasts of every kind which we could press into the service; while half-a-dozen postilions, shouting and cracking their whips, strove to urge the motley cavalcade onward. Still we crept up only by inches.

Before any one of us had sufficiently recovered himself to speak, we were startled by a dull sound, like a rushing wind, or distant, rumbling thunder; and an immense mass of snow, many hundred feet in depth, and covering a third of the cone, parted from its place, and, like a great, foaming wave, broken and shapeless, rushed down the mountain's side. For the moment, all eyes were fixed upon it.

That afternoon they drove to the mountain's top and saw the sunset, only to be late home to Aunt Susan's tea biscuit and cold chicken, and having a surprising appetite. The next day they made a picnic trip to another mountain, leaving the horse half way up and walking the rest of the way. At noon they returned, and beside a cold spring that bubbled beneath a rock they opened their lunch baskets.

The whole is quite orderly and simple; nothing of finery; but the wonderful decency, and the strange situation, more than supply the place of it. In the evening we descended by the same way, passing through many clouds that were then forming themselves on the mountain's side. By special arrangement with, and by permission of, the publishers, Houghton, Mifflin Co.

No mountaineer would ever think of looking here for water, much less ever dream of finding a lone spring away out in the desert, several miles from the mountain's base. Where the range we just came through leaves the mother mountain stands a peak, seemingly alone, and built up of many colored rocks, in belts, and the whole looks as if tipped with steel.

Only think of how you would dress yourself if you were going out deer-stalking, and you will come to something of this kind barring the pockets of your shooting-coat, which are certainly inadmissible, from motives of military neatness and discipline; and barring, too, the buttoning up to the chin, which, on the mountain's side, you had perhaps rather dispense with; but which the soldier must adhere to, if he would keep up the essential degree of stiffness and smartness of dress.
