"Well, man, what now?" "I never knowed such a thing in this here parish afore," began Mr. Stirn; "and I can only 'count for it by s'posing that them foreign Papishers have been semminating " "Been what?" "Semminating " "Disseminating, you blockhead, disseminating what?" "Damn the stocks," began Mr. Stirn, plunging right in medias res, and by a fine use of one of the noblest figures in rhetoric.
They then entered the shop. A very dignified gentleman, with exquisitely arranged beard and moustache, and dressed unexceptionably, made a diplomatic bow to Mr. Cockayne and his wife. Cockayne, without ceremony, plunged in medias res. He wanted to look at the rose-leaf with the diamonds on it. The gentleman in black observed that it became English ladies' complexion "
"Now then I can go on," thought Maltravers; why, I cannot say, for I do not see the sequitur; but on he went in medias res. "Alice, you sing charmingly." "Ah! sir, you you " she stopped abruptly, and trembled visibly. "Yes, I overheard you, Alice." "And you are angry?" "I! Heaven forbid!
Townsend's retirement. Before I proceed to describe the task I set myself in The Spectator when I obtained a free hand, and to record my journalistic aims and aspirations, I desire to describe Mr. Townsend a man whose instinctive genius for journalism has, to my mind, never been surpassed. Taking The Spectator as the pivot of my life, I began this book by a plunge in medias res.
A hyaena or jackal has started laughing outside phew! what an eerie laugh mad as can be what horrid humour! I have mentioned a lady's husband was taken away from her and eaten by a tiger lately, somewhere about this country, so we begin to feel quite in medias res, though far from the madding town. To-morrow we drive to our shoot start at six! To drive in dumbies, about eight miles.
Nor could we ease ourselves by taking them off, for this was a lengthy business, first necessitating the removal of water-bottles, haversacks, bandoliers, and revolver-belts; and orders to move might arrive while we were in medias res.
"Now then I can go on," thought Maltravers; why, I cannot say, for I do not see the /sequitur/; but on he went /in medias res/. "Alice, you sing charmingly." "Ah! sir, you you " she stopped abruptly, and trembled visibly. "Yes, I overheard you, Alice." "And you are angry?" "I! Heaven forbid!
These last immediately jumped in medias res and on the afternoon of the same day secured a writ of habeas corpus from Norman J. Kitrell, District Judge of Harris County, Texas, returnable the following morning. The next day, January 28th, Kitrell released Dodge from custody.
Perhaps the method of rushing at once "in medias res" is, of all the ways of beginning a story, or a separate branch of a story, the least objectionable. The reader is made to think that the gold lies so near the surface that he will be required to take very little trouble in digging for it.
Yet are not all lives more or less failures, however successful they may appear to be at one time or another, contrasted, let us say, with what they hoped for? We compromise so much with everything our dreams and all. As for his reforms, they may be coming fast enough, or they may not. In medias res. But as for him...? Life's little ironies are not always manifest.
