How often afterward, returning in the evening from some entertainment, I have buried myself in the grammar and tried to write hieroglyphics. True, I strove still more frequently and persistently to follow the philosopher Lotze. Obedient to a powerful instinct, my untrained intellect had sought to read the souls of men.
But throngs flocked to the camp of Materialism, for the trumpets of her leaders had a clearer, more confident sound than the lower and less readily understood opposing cries of the philosophers. Vogt's wrath was directed with special keenness against my teacher, Lotze. These topics were rarely discussed at the tavern or among the members of the corps.
He aimed at it with a crumpled envelope he held in his hand, and hit it. James turned with a start. "Look here, James this isn't Hegel and it isn't Lotze and it isn't Bergson it's life. Haven't you got a remark to contribute?" James's blue eyes showed no resentment. "I'm very sorry for you all," he said, quietly, "especially for mother." "Why?" "Because she's the oldest. We've got the future.
The questions of religion and the need of religious experience interested Eucken early, and these have never parted from him during the long years which have since passed away. At an early age he entered the University of Göttingen and attended the philosophical classes of Hermann Lotze. Lotze looked at religion and all else from the intellectual point of view.
Opposed to this philosophy are GOLDWIN SMITH'S Lectures on the Study of History; C. Kingsley, in his Miscellanies, The Limits of Exact Science as applied to History; Froude, in Short Studies, vol. i., The Science of History; Lotze, as above; also, Flint, and Droysen, Grundriss der Historik. Hegel's Philosophy of History has profound observations, but connected with an a priori theory.
Following the large idea introduced by Schopenhauer, which was enriched by the minuter studies of Lotze, Wundt, and Lipps, we may sum the foregoing analysis in the statement that music expresses the abstract aspects of action, its ease or difficulty, its advance or retrocession, its home coming or its wandering, its hesitation or its surety, its conflicts and its contrasts, its force or its weakness, its swiftness or slowness, its abruptness or smoothness, its excitement or repose, its success or failure, its seriousness or play.
In the first rank of the thinkers who have made their appearance since Hegel and Herbart stand Fechner and Lotze, both masters in the use of exact methods, yet at the same time with their whole souls devoted to the highest questions, and superior to their contemporaries in breadth of view as in the importance and range of their leading ideas Fechner a dreamer and sober investigator by turns, Lotze with gentle hand reconciling the antitheses in life and science.
If the divine value of them is evident only when they are collectively looked at, then, Lotze rightly says, the world surely becomes poorer and not richer for God's utterance of the fiat. He might much better have remained contented with his merely antecedent choice of the scheme, without following it up by a creative decree.
Lotze, the energetic antagonist of “vital force,” the founder of the mechanical theory of vital processes, was himself a theist, and was so far from recognising any contradiction between the mechanical point of view and the Christian belief in God, that he included the former without ceremony in his theistic philosophical speculations.
I intended later to devote myself earnestly to the study of physiology, for without it Lotze could be but half understood; and from physiologists emanated the conflict which at that time so deeply stirred the learned world. In Gottingen especially the air seemed, as it were, filled with physiological and other questions of the natural sciences.
