The variety in costume amongst the ladies consists entirely in the head ornaments; the only difference in the scanty covering which is bestowed on the other parts of the person, lies in the choice of the wearer, who either ties the piece of linen, blue or white, under the arms and across the breasts, or fastens it rather fantastically on one shoulder, leaving one breast naked.

He murmured, in a gravely joyous tone "Tell us, Mary, what thou hast seen where thou hast been? I saw the shroud and the linen cloths, and the angels seated on the tomb. And I saw the glory of the Risen One." She asked him "Father, why do you sing about angels seated on a tomb?" And he replied "Little light of my eyes, I sing of the angels because Jesus, our Lord, is risen to heaven."

The result was a rich robe, of a snow white fabric, never seen in the forest. It was linen. Snow White clapped her hands with joy. "'Tis for your wedding dress, if you will marry me," said Spin Head. Snow White's cheeks blushed red, but she looked at him and her eyes said "yes." "Wait," said Spin Head. "I'll make you a bridal veil." Once more his fingers wrought wonders.

They wear their faces half concealed, and beneath the strips of linen which lie upon the head is placed a Greek fez, around which the hair is wound in plaits. On our return, dinner was served on board the royal steamer; and afterwards, as we sailed in a glorious sunset through this archipelago, the deck of the vessel was changed to a dancing room.

The conversation flagged, and the soldiers began settling down to sleep. "Look at the stars. It's wonderful how they shine! You would think the women had spread out their linen," said one of the men, gazing with admiration at the Milky Way. "That's a sign of a good harvest next year." "We shall want some more wood." "You warm your back and your belly gets frozen. That's queer." "O Lord!"

Man needs buttons on his shirts, and clean linen, but for the life of me I cannot see why that need defines a woman's duty in any respect. Let him do his own washing, and sew on his own buttons. Suppose a woman should need to have hooks and eyes sewed upon her dress, as some of them do, sometimes, after taking a very long breath, would that determine it to be man's duty to sew them on?

Some of these Nicknacks were concealed about 'em; but the Gentlewomen in these parts being very thinly dressed in Silk and Fine Linen, they could hide but little, and our Linguist was bidden to advise them to be Wise in Time, and surrender their Valuables, which they did.

And my bewilderment deepened as I realized that they were speaking not modern Italian, but what I gathered to be the Italian of the sixteenth century. I found myself with Antonio in a tower-room, whither he had brought me on the ladies' retirement to prepare themselves for supper. The wind, howling round the tower, pressed against the narrow windows covered with oiled linen.

They should have waited; they might have married a social equal at something between fifty and sixty. Another old friend was Mr Quarmby. Unwedded he, and perpetually exultant over men who, as he phrased it, had noosed themselves. He made a fair living, but, like Dr Johnson, had no passion for clean linen.

We each paid sixpence a night in advance for a bed, the linen of which had a look of having been washed in tobacco juice and dried up a chimney. When a guest had paid his money, he was supplied with a key and about an inch of thin candle, which was affixed by its own grease to a broken shard of pottery.
