"It seemed as though everything that meant anything had gone out of my life. I became worn out, nervous; and though the days were bad enough, the nights were a source of dread. I began to suffer from insomnia I could not sleep. This was even before my supposed uncle came. I used to read for hours and hours in my room after I had gone to bed.
"Yes," the bishop agreed; "it is pleasant to be in a position to do things like this...." A MONTH later found the bishop's original state of perplexity and insomnia returned and intensified. He had done none of all the things that had seemed so manifestly needing to be done after his vision in the Athenaeum. All the relief and benefit of his experience in London had vanished out of his life.
He had begun life in a comfortable position, he was a man of fair education, and he suffered, for weeks at a stretch, from melancholia and insomnia. Afraid to disturb his family, he would slip quietly from his wife's side, when his thoughts became intolerable, and wander about the house. And about three o'clock one morning, late in August, chance directed him into the shop.
Now that I had to connect her you had lost in Wales with the model, many things returned to me which I had previously forgotten, things which you had told me in London. I had quite lately learnt a good deal from Dr. Mivart, who formerly practised near the town in which you lived, but who now lives in London. He had been attending me for insomnia.
It would have cured the most chronic insomnia, but I was not labouring under such a disease, and I slept for ten hours. This sort of treatment easily led me to believe that I was not in any kind of hostelry; but where was I? How was I to suppose that I was in a hospital?
All was "well" with him, well in mind, well in body. He had no more insomnia, and for the first time in years his stomach gave him no trouble because he had forgotten all about it. He even got through the winter without taking cold something that had never been heard of before.
It was this excitement that he must cure, and as there are many remedies for insomnia, he tried those which, it seemed to him, were suitable to his case; but bromide of potassium, in spite of its hypnotic properties, produced no more effect than the over-working of the brain and body.
In the winter of 188-, I was afflicted by a series of nervous ailments, brought on by overwork and overworry. Chief among these was a protracted and terrible insomnia, accompanied by the utmost depression of spirits and anxiety of mind.
They were talking in French. One was his mother's, and he heard her say: "Another five minutes, Sonia, and perhaps I shall be ready for bed. At last I'm beginning to feel as if I might be able to sleep. If only I were like Jimmy! He doesn't know anything about the torments of insomnia." "Poor Madame!" returned Sonia, in her rather thick, but pleasantly soft, voice. "Your head a little back.
Of course, it has its ridiculous side, but I really think it would comfort John Fulton quite a little if he heard that you had left Aiken. You see he's half crazy with grief and insomnia, and he's got it in his head that if Lucy had fewer other people to amuse her, she might get bored again and in sheer boredom turn again to him. But just use your influence with Lucy, if you've got any.
