It was my father, then, from whose scorching gaze I had been shrinking with such unutterable dread and loathing, the being whom she had once so idolatrously loved, whom in spite of her wrongs she continued to love, the being who had destroyed her peace, broken her heart, and laid her in a premature grave the being whom her dying lips commanded me to forgive, whom her prophetic dream warned me to protect from unknown danger.
The Gothic interior, which had once, no doubt, been idolatrously frescoed and furnished with statues, was now naked and coldly Protestant; one window, partly stained, let in a little colored light to mix with the wintry day that struck through the others. The pulpit was in the centre of the church, and the clerk's desk diagonally across from it.
True, an older Dick, strangely haggard and with gray running in the brown of his hair, but still Dick; the Dick whose eyes had lighted at the sight of a girl, who had shamelessly persisted in holding her hand at that last dinner, who had almost idolatrously loved her. And he had not mentioned her name. When he had finished the reading Dick sat for a moment with the papers in his hand, thinking.
I have wandered through every street; I have sought her with every acquaintance; I have inquired at every door! No one has seen my child! Patience till morning; then perhaps the corpse of your only one may come floating to shore. Oh, God in heaven! What though my heart has hung too idolatrously upon this daughter, yet surely the punishment is severe! Heavenly Father! Surely it is severe!
Last of all, they are idolatrously advanced and dignified, in so much as holy mystical significations are given them, which are a great deal more than God’s word alloweth in any rites of human institution, as shall be shown afterwards; and so it appeareth how the ceremonies, as now urged and used, are idols.
When that too has gone who knows whether then I shall give you your liberty; whether I shall not then become really cruel, merciless, even brutal toward; whether I shall not take a diabolical pleasure in tormenting and putting on the rack the man who worships me idolatrously, the while I remain indifferent or love someone else; perhaps, I shall enjoy seeing him die of his love for me.
Because of the need they have of realizing themselves as individuals, of asserting themselves exclusively, egotistically, idolatrously opposing the self in them to everything else, placing it in harsh contrast with the nature which enwraps us, with the poetry which raises us above ourselves, with the harmony which binds us to others, with the adoration which carries us toward God. No, no, no!
