The senator greeted us gravely, and I could not but take it as a good omen when, in his pride of wealth and family and tradition, he laid bare everything to us, for the sake of Alma Willard. It was clear that in this family there was one word that stood above all others, "Duty." As we were about to leave after an interview barren of new facts, a young man was announced, Mr. Halsey Post.
But when we entered the kitchen, we found Delia More serving the supper on an end of the baking table, while warming his hands at the range stood Abel Halsey. "I came in across the track, from the hills," Abel explained to me. "I didn't know you had doings till I tied and blanketed an' I came on in anyhow, back way. I'm in luck too. I haven't had supper."
In surprise Penniston and his hearers had listened, but now a man, half-drunk perhaps, sprang upon the low wall upon which Halsey stood, and struck him savagely. "He is all alone," cried Susannah, "all alone among so many." She tried to struggle forward toward her husband through the crowd.
"Somebody had it?" she asked. "Yes. Halsey tried to stop whoever it was and fell. Gertrude, that blanket is not mine. I have never seen before." She held it up and looked at it: then she went to the door on to the veranda and threw it open. Perhaps a hundred feet from the house were two figures, that moved slowly toward us as we looked.
Louise was able to sit up, and she allowed Halsey and Liddy to assist her down-stairs late in the afternoon. The east veranda was shady, green with vines and palms, cheerful with cushions and lounging chairs. We put Louise in a steamer chair, and she sat there passively enough, her hands clasped in her lap. We were very silent.
Halsey, a prominent banker from the other great city of the state, Mr. Grunewald, Chairman of the Republican State Committee, and Mr. Frederick Grierson, who had become a very important man in our community.
After this Halsey instituted a series of unusual meetings for prayer and revival preaching, which he held after the ordinary evening classes in the School of the Prophets, which was now removed to the upper chambers of the finished temple. Now, as at other times, his preaching was successful.
For one awful moment I thought the house was on fire, and every drop of blood in my body gathered around my heart; then I knew. It was the engine of the automobile, and Halsey had come back. Hope sprang up afresh. Halsey's clear head and Gertrude's intuition might do what Liddy's hysteria and three detectives had failed in. After a time I thought I had been right.
"Then, God be praised, my joy is whole again! Speed thee, brother let her come to me! An' SHE say I am not myself but she will not; no, no, SHE will know me, I were a fool to doubt it. Bring her bring the old servants; they, too, will know me." "All are gone but five Peter, Halsey, David, Bernard, and Margaret." So saying, Hugh left the room.
Halsey, when I do think of it, it seems as if one day at a time were'nt enough, and as if I couldn't just set myself to get the Latin and the Greek, and preach just to a few folks and help a person that's needing a bit of help; but it's borne right in here upon me that what we need is the learning of the world, otherwise called the wisdom of the serpent.
