He repeatedly expressed his obligations to Barnum for the advice and assistance he had given him on the occasion of his first lecturing visit to the United States. Soon after Barnum arrived in London he was visited by Mr. Otto Goldschmidt, who had married Jenny Lind.
It was the chief subject of conversation upon the Stock Exchange, and many were the surmises as to what the effect of the news would be at the fields. Fugger, the father of the diamond industry, was standing discussing the question, when a little rosy-faced Jew, named Goldschmidt, came bustling up to him. He was much excited, for he speculated in stones, and had just been buying in for a rise.
Shortly afterwards, in North and South, Goldschmidt, on the occasion of Broechner's candidature for parliament, had written that the well-known atheist, H. Broechner, naturally, as contributor to The Fatherland, was supported by the "Party."
Lind's American Tour. Extraordinary Enthusiasm in America. Her Lavish Generosity. She marries Herr Otto Goldschmidt. Present Life of Retirement in London. Jenny Lind as a Public Benefactor. It was not that the "Swedish Nightingale" was supremely great in any chief quality of the lyric artist.
Besides the maternal uncle settled in France, of whom I have already spoken, I had still another uncle, my father's brother, who had gone to France as a boy, had become naturalised, and had settled in Paris. He was a little older than my father, a somewhat restless and fantastic character, whom Goldschmidt frequently met at the houses of mutual friends.
This part of the letter irritated me intensely, partly by the mentor's tone assumed in it, partly by a summing up of my critical methods which was founded simply and solely on the reading of three or four articles, more especially those on Rubens and Goldschmidt, and which quite missed the point.
They were written in a more colloquial style than anything I had written before, or than it was usual to write in Denmark at that time, and they alternated sometimes with longer essays, such as those on Andersen and Goldschmidt. Regarded merely as dramatic criticisms, they were of little value.
On the arrival of the American doctors and nurses in Berlin, it was decided to send both units to the East front and to put one in the small Silesian town of Gleiwitz and the other in the neighbouring town of Kosel. Count Talleyrand went with these two units, Goldschmidt Rothschild being attached to the Prussian Legation in Munich.
God bless and protect you and yours, dear madam, and certainly God's hand will remain with a blessing over your head. Once more forgive my bad English and the liberty I have taken, and believe me to be, dear madam, Yours most truly, JENNY GOLDSCHMIDT, née LIND. In answer to Mrs. Stowe's appeal on behalf of the Edmonsons, Jenny Lind wrote:
They were then living in Dresden, but Madame Goldschmidt had insisted on his hurrying over to England to see her old manager, and ascertain whether he really was in want. Barnum assured him that he was getting on comfortably, though he had to exercise economy, and that his family would presently come over and live with him in London. Goldschmidt urged him to come to Dresden to live.
