He had this day earnestly recommended modesty and humility; and it appeared almost offensive to him, that people as he went should tempt him in regard to these very virtues; for continually he heard men whisper, "That is Gellert!" What is fame, and what is honor?

GELLERT. "Tacitus is difficult to translate; and the Frenoh themselves have but bad translations of him." GELLERT. "And, on the whole, various reasons may be given why the Germans have not yet distinguished themselves in every kind of writing. While Arts and Sciences were in their flower among the Greeks, the Romans were still busy in War.

Four or five weeks after this of Gellert, Friedrich had another Dialogue, which also is partly on record, and is of more importance to us here: Dialogue with Major-General Saldern; on a certain business, delicate, yet profitable to the doer, nobody so fit for it as Saldern, thinks the King.

Scarcely a year after, on the 13th of December, 1769, Gellert died a pious, tranquil death, such as he had ever coveted. As the long train which followed his bier moved to the churchyard of St. John's, Leipzig, a peasant with his wife and children in holiday clothes entered among the last. It was Christopher with his family.

"And the moral," cried the king, with vivacity, as Gellert ceased for a moment. "Here is the moral, sire:" "If what you write offends the critic's rules, It is an evil sign, no doubt; But when 'tis lauded to the skies by fools, 'Tis time, indeed, to blot it out." "That is beautiful very beautiful; you have something gallant in your person. I understand every thing you say.

And to this day the place is called Beth Gellert, or the Grave of Gellert. There were formerly a man and a woman living in the parish of Llanlavan, in the place which is called Hwrdh. And work became scarce, so the man said to his wife, "I will go search for work, and you may live here."

He took a letter from the table, and handed it to his master. While he was breaking the seal, Conrad approached the door slowly and hesitatingly, evidently curious to hear the contents of the letter. He had not reached the door, when Gellert recalled him. "Conrad," said Gellert, with a trembling voice, "hear what this letter contains." "Well, I am really curious," said Conrad, smiling.

Strange as such a deduction may now appear, it had the most decided influence on the best minds. That Gellert and subsequently Lichtwer devoted themselves to this department, that even Lessing attempted to labor in it, that so many others turned their talents towards it, speaks for the confidence which this species of poetry had gained.

It was as though Gellert felt that it was the last time he would deliver these lectures; that those words so often and so impressively uttered would be heard no more from his mouth; and there was a peculiar sadness, yet a peculiar strength, in all he said that day.

It is entirely beyond my comprehension, professor, how you made it, and how you could have recollected all these charming histories. Who related all that to you?" "No one related it to me, it came from my own head and heart," said Gellert, pleasantly.
