The turf at her feet was white with innumerable daisies, and the only tree at that spot was the great chestnut beside which she stood, and against which, in her white dress and with her pallid face, she looked so strangely pure, so flower-like and yet ethereal, as if sprung from the daisies whitening the turf around her, and retaining something of their flower-like character, yet unsubstantial a beautiful form that might at any moment change to mist and float away from sight.
Reflect on the flower-like expansion of its arms, and then imagine it mounted on a stalk, mouth side upward, with those arms more tapering than they now are waving round the mouth. That, apparently, was the past of the starfish and its cousins.
She did not know how beautiful she herself looked at that moment, how the blue and white flowers and misty grasses had lent, as it were, a new grace to her form and countenance a flower-like expression that was sweet to see. Looking up all at once she encountered her companion's eyes fixed earnestly on her face.
"I I did not know you saw me." "I know now that all I did that night I did for you. Don swore at you remember?" The flower-like face in the purple cloud saddened. Brian distinctly heard the crackle of the camp fire. "I thrashed him for it!" "You said in your letter " "I said I would help him, yes, but I wrote and I made Don write because I could not bear to have you hurt and worried.
"Maria is dignified," said Evelyn, "but of course she has taught school a long time, and a school-teacher has to be dignified." "Are you intending to teach school?" asked Lee, and even as he asked the question he felt amused. The idea of this flower-like thing teaching school, or teaching anything, was absurd. She was one of the pupils of life, not one of the expounders.
She referred to this friend two or three times, and once mentioned his name, but Susan forgot it. She was such a beautiful, happy little thing, and seemed so exquisite an expression of spring-like, radiant youth and its innocent joy in living that the desolate and stranded creature she had befriended could think of nothing but her own awkward worship and the fascination of the flower-like charm.
Then she made an elaborate and thoughtful toilette. At forty-five Sarah's face was very large and horribly white. She restored, discreetly, delicately, the vanished rose. The beautiful, flower-like edges of her mouth were blurred. With a thin thread of rouge she retraced the once perfect outline. Wrinkles had drawn in the corners of the indomitable eyes, and ill-health had dulled their blue.
Beat that essence of charm and purity, God's best gift to man, redeeming him from his own grossness! Could such things be? John Lefolle would as soon have credited the French legend that English wives are sold in Smithfield. No! it could not be real that this flower-like figure was thrashed. "Do you mean to say ?" he cried.
There were other creatures as well as fish; lobsters and crabs and star-fishes; and the anemones, which "blow flower-like," and have such lovely colours that they are sometimes called "sea-roses," were waving their bright fringes to and fro, and catching the shrimps for their dinner with those same soft fingers of theirs.
As his ringing voice subsided, there fell a perfect silence, then a very roar of cheering filled it, and the hemlock rafters rang. And I saw the colour fly to Lois's face like a bright ensign breaking from its staff and opening in flower-like beauty.
