It is for her to find the one and there always is one that actually needs her. It is for her to correlate her personal discoveries and experiences with the general efforts of the community. This is no work for an occasional morning. It does not mean sporadic or even regular "neighborhood visiting." It means observation, reflection, and study.
The province of this new science is to correlate the discoveries of a wide range of collateral sciences paleontology, biology, medicine, and so on from the point of view of human history and human welfare. To this end all observable races of men are studied as to their physical characteristics, their mental and moral traits, their manners, customs, languages, and religions.
They don't cerebrate. They don't co-ordinate. They don't correlate. They have no initiative, no creative faculty, no mental curiosity or reflexes or reactions. He had to correlate and concentrate the various departments, and make them complete by making a place for effective graduate work. What kind of a father were the man who, because there could be no merit or desert in doing well, would not give his child a smile or a pleased word when he saw him trying his best? Would not such acknowledgment from the father be the natural correlate of the child's behaviour? and what would the father's smile be but the perfect reward of the child?
A prevailing idea though over-cultivation exhausts its organic correlate, and leads to defective nutrition of that part in the offspring. Hence they do not pursue the same idea as their fathers, but revert to a remoter ancestral historic idea, the organic correlate of which has lain fallow, thus gained strength.
For he had had no time as yet to correlate his thoughts, to pull himself together. And while one's heart might throb ten times, Beatrice saw terror in his blinking, bloodshot eyes.
