She changed her residence from Finsbury to the borough of Southwark, and settled near her friend Susanna Corder, with whom she united in the formation of a philanthropic association, "The Southwark Female Society for the relief of sickness and extreme want."
Whistler seem to me to reach his highest level in any one of the three portraits Lady Archibald Campbell, Miss Rose Corder, and "the lady in the fur jacket". I know that Mr. Walter Sickert considers the portrait of Lady Archibald Campbell to be Mr. Whistler's finest portrait. I submit, however, that the attitude is theatrical and not very explicit.
'Walked to Enfleld an' back. I was told of a job out there; but it's no good; they're full up. They say exercise is good for the 'ealth. I shall be a 'ealthy man before long, it seems to me. What do you think? 'Have you been to see Corder again? asked Sidney, after reflecting anxiously. 'No, I haven't! was the angry reply; 'an' what's more, I ain't goin' to!
The Comic C. then goes to sleep in a chair and has a vision on his own account, in which he beholds the apotheosis of MARIA still in the suit of dittoes and piloted by a couple of obviously overweighted Angels; and also the last moments of WILLIAM CORDER, who, as he stands under an enlarged "Punch" gibbet, pronounces the following impressive farewell before disappearing through a trap.
He was only gone a second or two, and you will remember that Corder saw Mayes leaving the premises within two minutes of that time!" "Yes!" "Well, Telfer was back in a second or two, without the paper, and went on with his affairs as before. That's pretty striking, eh?" "Yes," Hewitt answered thoughtfully, "it is."
But Corder came up, and made pretence to ask me for a match to light his pipe; and under cover of that he told me that he had seen Mayes not an hour before, coming out of the Admiralty. At this, of course, I pricked up my ears. I didn't know what they wanted me for, but if there was mischief, and that fellow had been there, it was likely at least that he might have been in it.
But the hand which I now saw, clearly enough, in the yellow light of a mid-London morning, lying half shut on the bedclothes, was lean, corder, knuckly, of a dusky pallor and thickly shaded with a swart growth of hair. It was the hand of Edward Hyde.
MARTIN is exhorting the crowd to step up and witness his domestic tragedy, while the injured MARIA, is taking the twopences at the door; WILLIAM CORDER is finishing a pipe, and two of the Angelic Visions are dancing, in blue velveteen and silver braid, to the appropriate air of "The Bogie Man."
H. Corder, on whose notification Mr. Espin, on August 21, examined its nearly monochromatic spectrum. The metamorphosis of Nova Cygni seemed repeated. The light of the new object, like that of its predecessor, was mainly concentrated in a vivid green band, identified with the chief nebular line by Copeland, Von Gothard, and Campbell. The second nebular line was also represented.
"None better," was the reply; "it's thick with game, sir, it is for sure and nobody to profit, only" he winked at the landlord "young Jim Corder!" The landlord emitted a deep grunt which was evidently recognized by the other as a laugh; for he himself laughed in a wild and not wholly pleasant manner, whereby I concluded that "young Jim Corder" was a standing joke in the neighborhood.
