The comedy has no idea in it, beyond the stale one, that so the world goes; and it concludes with the jaded discovery of a document at a convenient season for the descent of the curtain. A plot was an afterthought with Congreve.
I do not know how it is with others, but I feel the better always for the perusal of one of Congreve's nay, why should I not add even of Wycherley's comedies. I am the gayer at least for it; and I could never connect those sports of a witty fancy in any shape with any result to be drawn from them to imitation in real life. They are a world of themselves almost as much as fairy-land.
For what is Ben the pleasant sailor which Bannister gives us but a piece of satire a creation of Congreve's fancy a dreamy combination of all the accidents of a sailor's character his contempt of money his credulity to women with that necessary estrangement from home which it is just within the verge of credibility to suppose might produce such an hallucination as is here described.
