Such are the principal points of the system, and, according to the governor's regulations, the assistance thus offered is limited chiefly to the Church of England, the Church of Rome, and the Scottish Kirk, which "three grand divisions of Christians" are thus made, in fact, the three established communions of New South Wales. Letter of Rev. W. H. Walsh to S. P. G., dated October 6th, 1840.

A sudden disgust with the insensate smallness of the old-world way of living, a realization of sin, a sense of the unworthiness of all individual things, a desire for something comprehensive, sustaining, something greater, for wider communions and less habitual things, filled them.

Monthly Communions and Baptisms after the Second Lesson were viewed as 'not fit for a country church, and every attempt at even more secular improvements was treated with the most disappointing distrust and aversion.

This communication, produced some compliments from the archbishop, to Dr. Dupin, and these, led the latter, to address, to his grace, a letter, in which he mentioned generally, that, on some points in dispute, the supposed difference between the two communions was reconcileable.

Know then: that divinity which other communions and peoples have conjured up, falleth within the scope of their imagination, and not beyond it, whereas the reality of the Godhead is beyond all conceiving. As to the Holy Manifestations of God, They are the focal points where the signs, tokens and perfections of that sacred, pre-existent Reality appear in all their splendour.

Already the effect of such a faculty in advancing theological study and still more in uniting members of different communions in the pursuit of truth has been most marked. There is one point, however, in considering the influence of religion on Reconstruction which must be borne in mind.

With all the fervour of which I am capable I told her I had a request to make of her; told her that compliance with this request would have a bearing upon all our future communions, bringing us nearer to each other, forming a link between us.

Through the opening phases of the war the Established Church of England was inconspicuous; this is no longer the case, but it may be doubted whether the change is altogether to its advantage. To me this is a very great disappointment. I have always had a very high opinion of the intellectual values of the leading divines of both the Anglican and Catholic communions.

As for nonjuring principles, he was so wedded to them that he could see nothing but deadly schism outside the fold over which 'our late invalidly deprived fathers' presided. It only, as orthodox and unschismatic, 'was entitled to have its communions and excommunications ratified in heaven. No wonder he longed to see union restored, that so he might die in peace.

I would not have you judge of your progress in perfection by the number of your communions, or the multitude of your pious practices, or the length of your prayers, but by the victories which you gain over yourself, over your passions, your character, and your temper. Like all other good things, you can turn prayer to your spiritual detriment, when you have recourse to it through vain glory.
