Vietnam or Thailand ? Vote for the TOP Country of the Week !

Updated: May 2, 2025

The Commandant-General himself had not been able to change the result of the voting, but the old burgher who had no connection with the council of war practically determined the result of the meeting. The Krijgsraad was the supreme military authority in the country, and its resolutions were the law, all its infractions being punishable by fines.

The report arose thus: Our Commandant-General seeing the defenders of the battery at the foot of the Mole retreating, and hearing them cry, "Que nos cortan!" After ordering the corps of Chasseurs, 89 men and 9 officers, to fire, our chief returned, leaning upon the arm of Don Juan Creagh, and some inconsiderate person thought that he was wounded.

Commandant-General Botha: "I might point out that we should not insist so much on the technical meaning of words and this is especially true for your side, because we have assembled here with the aim of stopping the hostilities which cause you such great expenses every month; and our meeting may be able to bring these expenses to an end.

Lord Kitchener: "Would that meet your difficulty?" Commandant-General Botha: "No." Lord Kitchener: "Well, would two or three million be sufficient? We must have a limit before we can do anything." Commander-in-Chief de Wet: "It is impossible to stipulate the amount." Lord Kitchener: "If you were in a position to give a limit, it would simplify matters."

A debate now followed on the time that should be allowed for the discussion of the proposals at Vereeniging, and it was agreed that Commandant-General Botha should propose a term that very day before the Commission left Pretoria. It was subsequently settled that the delegates must arrive at a decision before Saturday evening, May 31st.

Before, however, the meeting could make a proposal, it would be necessary to hear what the state of affairs really was. Thereupon, firstly, Commandant-General Louis Botha, then I, and lastly, General De la Rey, gave a report of how matters stood.

On retiring that night I found my left leg injured in several places by splinters of shell and stone. My garments had to be soaked in water to remove them, but after I had carefully cleaned my wounds they very soon healed. The next morning I waited on the Commandant-General.

The new burghers shall equally with the old burghers be entitled to vote at the election for State President and Commandant-General. This Government will always be prepared to take into consideration such friendly suggestions regarding the details of the Franchise Law as Her Majesty's Government, through the British Agent, may wish to convey to it.

A portion of the British forces appeared to go from Belfast via Dullstroom to Lydenburg, these operations being only feebly resisted. Our commandos were now parcelled out by the Commandant-General, who followed a path over the Crocodile River bridge with his own section, which was pursued by a strong force of Buller's.

Commander-in-Chief de Wet: "I would have it clearly understood that I quite agree with what has been said by the Commandant-General, namely that the honour of every officer is engaged for these documents, and if your Excellencies agree it will give us a strong weapon with which to return to the delegates."
