There is little else that can recall the past, although the site of the ancient Clopton mansion that Shakespeare purchased is undeniably here. The history of the house that has passed and that of its successors has a very definite interest. Shakespeare left New Place to his favourite daughter, Susanna, and to her daughter, Elizabeth Nash, in second marriage Lady Barnard.

A historian named Leland of the sixteenth century says this about New Place and its surroundings: 'There is a right goodly chappell, in a fayre street towardes the south ende of the towne dedicated to the Trinitye; this chappell was newly re-edified by one Hugh Clopton, Mayor of London; this Hugh Clopton builded also by the north side of this chappell a praty house of brick and tymbre, wherein he lived in his latter dayes and dyed. To appreciate that fully, you should see the queer old spelling!

On her death Sir John Barnard kept the place as a residence until he sold it to Sir Edward Walker, whose daughter Barbara married Sir John Clopton, descendant of the man who built the first house at the end of the fifteenth century. Sir John pulled down the old house, rebuilt it, and was succeeded by Sir Hugh Clopton.

The house was an old one, even in Shakespeare's day, as it was probably erected in 1490 by Sir Hugh Clopton.

The noble bridge, built in the reign of Henry VII. by Sir Hugh Clopton, and afterwards widened, excited my admiration. It was a much finer piece of work than the one built long afterwards. I have hardly seen anything which gave me a more striking proof of the thoroughness of the old English workmen.

Of Saville who, as having swooned, is spared all this scene of horror, and who leaves the country for ever little or nothing is more said: and Clopton Hall remains a ruin, tenanted by ghosts and bats.

We are satisfied the honor, safety, and independence of the Southern people require the organization of a Southern Confederacy a result to be obtained only by separate State secession that the primary object of each slave-holding State ought to be its speedy and absolute separation from a Union with hostile States. It was Nick, then, whom he had seen crossing the market-square. Wat Raven, who swept Clopton bridge, had seen two boys go up the Warwick road. "One were thy Nick, Muster Attwood," said he, thumping the dirt from his broom across the coping-stone, "and the other were Dawson's Hodge." The angry tanner turned again into the market-place.

I've promised to hold her hand through it all. Major is getting up the notes for General Clopton and he's touching on Peters Brown only in high places. It'll be mostly a show-down of old General Darrah and the three governors I'm thinking. "The Dames of the Confederacy and the Art League are going to have entries on the program without number. I have been interviewed and interviewed.
