A great tent fly had been put up inside the ballroom and round the walls had been built rows of booths representing the various attractions of a circus side show, but these were now vacated and on the floor swarmed a shouting, laughing medley of youth and colour clowns, bearded ladies, acrobats, bareback riders, ringmasters, tattooed men and charioteers.

Soon the field was dense with fugitives. So thick was the cloud of dust raised by the flying multitude that nothing could be seen. The men and women are just as bad. In the dusk they cast away their weapons, ceasing from the fight; and though the meeting of the two had been full of vigor and friendship in the morning, yet was their parting at night mournful and full of sorrow. But when the Hebrews were gone he followed them with his army. At the last moment the sea was divided, so that the fugitives passed it dry-shod. When the pursuers drove in after them, the waves rushed back and drowned horse, foot, charioteers, and king. You spoke of revelation, my Gaspar " The blue eyes of the Greek sparkled.
