The Cleveland Plain Dealer was the natural successor of the Cleveland Daily Advertiser, a Democratic paper published about a third of a century since, by Canfield & Spencer. The Plain Dealer was owned and edited from its start by J. W. Gray, who made it a sharp and spicy journal.
Up one aisle and down the next velvet, satin, lace and broadcloth here the costume the great Canfield had worn in Richard III; there the little cocked hat and the slashed jerkin in which Maude Hammond, as Peterkins, winged her way to fame up through the hearts of a million children whose ages ranged from seven to seventy.
I could feel them through the spring overcoat ads. "What is an equinox?" "I think I must have left my matches upstairs," I said, and went up to look for them. I stayed aloft ten minutes and hoped that by that time she would have passed on to some other topic. When I slunk into the living room again I hastily suggested a game of double Canfield, but Titania's brow was still perplexed.
It is possible that there was not a heart in Canfield but gave an expectant throb when the rumble and roar of the train shook the little place to its centre, and was heard to stop, a thing it did not often do; and there were but few who did not imagine, and earnestly sympathize with the joy it was bringing to one home in their midst. "There they come!
They include vanity, undue attention to what our neighbors think of us, a false appreciation of the values of things, and they may all be summed up into what I propose to call with due acknowledgement to Mrs. Canfield the Worry of the Squirrel Cage. I will let the author express her own meaning of this latter term. When Mr. and Mrs.

Stanley's fine luncheon, drank the clear water from the brook, and talked great talk. Compared with Mr. Canfield I was a babe at wandering and equally at talking. Was there any business he had not been in, or any place in the country he had not visited?
Miss Strong, who had industriously circulated the report of her visit, with many additions and wonderfully sly, meaning looks, now felt called upon to supply the public with a reason, so she told her dearest friend that Ernestine Dering had had a foolish little love affair, and broken her heart over it; and before twenty-four hours, the whole of Canfield had heard from, or told their dearest friend, the same thing; while Mrs.
The effect of this remark upon Mr. Canfield was magical. He threw up both his hands and cried out: "You're that way, are you?" as though for the first time he really understood. We were at last on common ground. "Partner," said he, "you needn't tell nothin' about it. I've been right there myself." At once he began to bustle about with great enthusiasm.
"Well, we can go together if you like," George said. "We can't cover quite as much ground in that way, but I guess we can accomplish more in the long run!" The boys had proceeded only a short distance when they heard Canfield calling to them. A moment later they heard the caretaker's steps ringing on the hard floor of the gangway down which they were advancing.
