Success in war depends ultimately on the brain-power of the chief leaders and organisers; and that source of strength has long ago been dried up in Turkey by adhesion to a sterilising creed and cramping traditions.
Our women spend all they can afford in buying these materials, and save, in using their own intelligence and hands in making them up. Very few, in considering the work of our women, take into account the real brain-power expended in this triple combination of economy, taste, and execution.

If you eat an indigestible meal, you are unable to perform good brain-work after it. If you feed the body on material that will not nourish it, the brain refuses to work. If you are in the clutches of disease, we cannot expect of you a high measure of brain-power; in other words, the manifestations of the mind are weakened by the disorder of its instrument, the body.
