"I have just got an invite from the Kearneys. Congratulate me. "Dear Vivian, yours faithfully, "Ormsby Park, Oct. 18 . "By desire of Sir Berdmore, I have to request the fulfilment of a promise, upon the hope of which being performed I have existed through this dull month. Pray, my dear Vivian, come to us immediately. Ormsby has at present little to offer for your entertainment.
But the idea of her own hypocrisy was distressing to her, and she rushed at the difficulty with hurried, eager words, resolving that, at any rate, there should be no longer any doubt between them. 'Mrs Askerton, she said, 'I know it all. There is nothing for you to tell. I know what the sword is. 'What is it that you know? 'That you were married long ago to Mr Berdmore.
She was married to Colonel Askerton as soon as Captain Berdmore died, and this took place before she came to Belton. I hope you will remember that. It all occurred out in India, and I really hardly know what business we have to inquire about it now.
Of course it is true. Does she not know that it would not have reached her from Aylmer Park if it were not true? Provocation! Badly treated! Went away! Married to Colonel Askerton as soon as Captain Berdmore died! Why, Frederic, she cannot have been taught to understand the first principle of morals in life! And she that was so much with my poor sister!
At first I took her for somebody else I knew slightly ever so long ago, and I was thinking of that other person at the time. 'And what was the other person's name? 'I can't even remember that at the present moment. 'Mrs Askerton was a Miss Oliphant. 'That wasn't the other lady's name. But, independently of that, they can't be the same. The other lady married a Mr Berdmore.
Sir Berdmore Scrope Vivian found a more unmanageable personage; for the baronet was confoundedly shrewd, and without a particle of sentiment in his composition. It was a great thing, however, to gain him; for Sir Berdmore was a leading country gentleman, and having quarrelled with Ministers about the corn laws, had been counted disaffected ever since.
She copied letters for Sir Berdmore, and composed letters for Lord Courtown, and construed letters to Lord Beaconsfield; they, in return, echoed her praises to her delighted relative, who was daily congratulated on the possession of "such a fascinating sister in law." "Well, Vivian," said Mrs.
'I often wonder that one person isn't more often found to be like another, said Mrs Askerton. 'People often are like, said he, 'but not like in such a way as to give rise to mistakes as to identity. Now, I should have stopped you in the street and called you Mrs Berdmore. 'Didn't I once see or hear the name of Berdmore in this house? asked Clara. Then that look of pain returned.
It was thought proper, however, in this stage of the proceedings, that the persons interested should meet together; and so the two Lords, and Sir Berdmore, and Vivian were invited to dine with the Marquess alone, and in his library.
My memory is very poor, but if I remember rightly, Colonel Askerton did know a Captain Berdmore a long while ago, before he was married; and you may probably have heard him mention the name. This did not quite satisfy Clara, but she said nothing more about it then. If there was a mystery which Mrs Askerton did not wish to have explored, why should she explore it?
