How surprised the old fisherman was when he saw the fish jumping at those tiny hooks with feathers; and how round the eyes of his children were as they looked on; and how pleased they were with the bakhshîsh which they received, including a couple of baithooks for the eldest boy!
Those poor Russian pilgrims faring foot-sore across the great frozen plains, lured on by this mirage of blessedness, sleeping by the wayside, and sometimes never waking again! Poor humanity, like a blind Oriental beggar on the deserted roadway crying Bakhshísh to vain skies, from whose hollow and futile spaces floats the lone word, Mâfísh "there is nothing."
In the evening a slim young native came to me and offered to swim across the river for Bakhshish, "a present." I promised it to him, and he ran a quarter of a mile up, and plunged into the torrent, landing on the opposite side a little below the bungalow. He then went up the river again, and swam down to this side, no mean feat in turbulent water running as it did with tremendous velocity.
The camels varied from fifty-eight to sixty-four, when specimens were forwarded to the harbour-town. The expenditure amounted toL92 13s., including pay and "bakhshish" to the Baliyy Shaykhs, but not including our friends the Sayyid, Furayj, and the Wakil Mohammed Shahadah.
Taisir and Aboud were also abiding in Shibahm. Taisir when he met us, on the minute asked for bakhshish, saying he had been ill when we parted and had had none though we had sent it to him. Oh! there was such kissing of hands! so we thought it politic to love our enemy and gave him a present. The Wazir Salim-bin-Ali had travelled with us to take care of us in the absence of his master.
A human curiosity brought to interest the stranger and increase his bakhshísh. For lo! the little boy had six fingers on his right hand! The child held it shyly clenched, but the father forcibly parted the fingers to exhibit them. And the child lifted up his voice and wept bitterly.
He took hold of Bakhshish, and when the dirty anarchist didn't move along fast enough, he took hold of him well, a bit rough, you might say, when up rushes Madeline and calls to the cop, 'Let that boy alone! Gee I don't know just what did happen awful mix-up. Next thing I knew Madeline hauled off and pasted the policeman a fierce one with her tennis racket! SENATOR: She struck the officer?
A merry little mob pursues us as we ride through each encampment, with outstretched hands and half-jesting, half-plaintive cries of "Bakhshîsh! bakhshîsh!" They do not really expect anything. It is only a part of the game. And when the Lady holds out her open hand to them and smiles as she repeats, "Bakhshîsh! bakhshîsh!" they take the joke quickly, and run away, laughing, to their sports.
The Shaykhs swore, by all holy things, that this was the veritable Tuwayl; and a Bedawi, who declared that he knew where water lay in the neighbourhood, refused to show it sans the preliminary "bakhshish." Mashallah! It is a noble race.
He had a free passage for himself, his child, and eight sacks of rice, with the promise of a napoleon by way of "bakhshish;" yet he complained aloud that he had no meat to break his fast at dawn an Arab of pure blood would rather have starved. He shirked answering questions concerning the number of his tribe.
