Again they sat in silence while the machine wrenched itself in and out of ruts and through arroyos. She found herself wondering what his life had been? A colonel at nineteen! The swales and rich arroyos, in which the grass had been so lush, had been badly drowned out by the flood. It would be several weeks before the lowlands offered good pasturage again.
