"Science has succeeded in so far analysing man that we know already that choice and what is called freedom of will is nothing else than " Stay, gentlemen, I meant to begin with that myself I confess, I was rather frightened.
It appears to us that the reason why science is so coldly received in ordinary society is, that either by reason of its unripeness for generalisation, or of the tendency of its cultivators to keep continually analysing and multiplying facts, it has not in general been presented in propositions which the ordinary mind can comprehend or make use of.
The interesting point, in a word, is not the two symbolical colourless marks indicating the two ends of the spectrum; it is the continuity between, with its changing wealth of colouring, and the double progress of shades which resolve it into red and violet. But it is impossible to arrive at this concrete transition unless we begin from direct intuition and descend to the analysing concepts.
In the country it shows him leading a life of roving adventure, becoming tinker, gypsy, postillion, ostler; associating with various kinds of people, chiefly of the lower classes, whose ways and habits are described; but, though leading this erratic life, we gather from the book that his habits are neither vulgar nor vicious, that he still follows to a certain extent his favourite pursuits, hunting after strange characters, or analysing strange words and names.
The absurdity of this was disguised from him by the opinion he adopted, that reasoning is merely analysing our own general notions, or abstract ideas; and that the proposition, Socrates is mortal, is evolved from the proposition, Socrates is a man, simply by recognising the notion of mortality as already contained in the notion we form of a man.
"Can you tell me how far it is to Poetical?" The man addressed half turned, disclosing a thin and delicate face to Steering. Then he reined his horse in gently. "Good-evening, sair. Is it that you inquire to Poetical? It is a vair' long five miles f'm here, sair." Steering rode up beside the man, more and more pleased, regarding and analysing.
"Then discard suspicion as fast as you can; it will only make you unhappy, and not prevent your being deceived. If you are suspicious, you will have the constant fear of deception hanging over you, which poisons existence." After these remarks I remained silent for some time; I was analysing my own feelings, and I felt that I had acted in a very absurd manner.
"That you might not be separated from him, my dear!" Clara thanked Sir Willoughby for the kindness of thinking of her father, mentally analysing the kindness, in which at least she found no unkindness, scarcely egoism, though she knew it to be there. "We might propose it," said he. "As a compliment?" "If he would condescend to accept it as a compliment.
And if on analysing all secondary superinduced ideas, we find these to be our final tests of right and wrong, we cannot refuse to class bodily conduct as right or wrong according to the beneficial or detrimental results produced. Punishments, we call them, in the absence of a better word; for they are not punishments in the literal sense.
But if we are called upon to explain what we mean by substance, and wish to avoid the vice of reasoning in a circle, the answer is by no means so easy. But after what has been said above, the solution of this question becomes easy enough, although by the common mode of procedure merely analysing our conceptions it would be quite impossible.
