Coxwell to provide a suitable craft, and to undertake its management. The principals of the working committee were Colonel Sykes, M.P., Dr. Lee, and Mr. James Glaisher, F.R.S., and a short conference between these gentlemen and the experienced aeronaut soon made it clear that a mammoth balloon far larger than any in existence was needed for the work in hand.
They had taken so much pride in the big hike that to even suggest giving it up, and just in the supreme moment of victory, as it were, seemed next door to sacrilege, and yet they could not get around the fact that it seemed right up to them to try and save that forlorn aeronaut.
"There is never any dizziness in a balloon, as is often erroneously supposed, for in it you are the only point in space without any possibility of comparison with another, and therefore the means of becoming giddy are not at hand." A very experienced aeronaut, who numbers his ascents by hundreds, has assured me that he never knew of a single case of dizziness.
It is derived from the French parer to parry, and chute a fall. In appearance a parachute is very similar to an enormous umbrella. M. Blanchard, one of the pioneers of ballooning, has the honour of first using a parachute, although not in person. The first "aeronaut" to descend by this apparatus was a dog.
"That helps," he murmured. "See, our last guest arrives." A tall, spare-looking man was just being announced. They heard his name as Andrea presented him to a companion "Colonel Mayson!" Mademoiselle Celaire saw a gleam in her companion's eyes. "It is coming the idea?" she whispered. "Very vaguely," he admitted. "Who is this Colonel Mayson?" "Our only military aeronaut," Peter replied.
Sharp found that even with one propeller the Red Cloud did fairly well, making good speed. "Now for home, to repair everything, and we'll be ready for a longer trip," the aeronaut said to the young inventor, as they turned around, and headed off before the wind, while hundreds below them cheered. "We ought to carry spare propellers if we're going to smash into school towers," remarked Tom.
Besides some other stirring adventures in his speedy craft Tom rescued, from a burning balloon that fell into the lake, the aeronaut, John Sharp. Later Mr. Sharp and Tom built an airship, called the RED CLOUD, in which they had some strenuous times. Their adventures in this craft of the air form the basis for the third book of the series, entitled "Tom Swift and His Airship."
Philosophical as ever the aeronaut clung to his craft, dispatched an excellent lunch which the Princess Isabel, Comtesse d'Eu, daughter of Dom Pedro, the deposed Emperor of Brazil, sent to his eyrie in the branches, and finally extricated himself and his balloon neither much the worse for the accident. He had failed but his determination to win was only whetted.
It was not a great ascension, but the amateur aëronaut had gained the distinction of making the first balloon ascension ever made in East Africa. He would have gone higher if his shoes had been heavier. To me fell the next chance, and I knew that my one hundred and forty pounds would not seriously handicap the balloon.
The flying stage about him was empty save for Asano and their suite of attendants. Directed by the aeronaut he placed himself in his seat. He then drank a mixture containing ergot a dose, he learnt, invariably administered to those about to fly, and designed to counteract the possible effect of diminished air pressure upon the system. Having done so, he declared himself ready for the journey.
