What are their qualifications? Let the Society answer in its own words: "'Free blacks are a greater nuisance than even slaves themselves." African Repository, vol. ii, p. 328. In the pontificate of John XXII, about the year 328, a zealous Dominican bishop, called Bartholomew of Bologna, went as a missionary among them; and many of the Eutychians or Monophysites returned to the bosom of the Catholic church. In the 16th century the Catholics were so furiously persecuted by Zachary, a schismatical patriarch, that they fled and took refuge in other countries.

It represents more than twice our total wealth in 1850, and one-twelfth of our present national wealth of $328,000,000,000. In order to estimate further the cost and realize the suffering of the war, let us turn for a moment to the nations devastated in Europe. In Belgium and Northern France 9,500,000 were being fed by the Commission for Relief in Belgium until Germany forbade it.

MATERIALS. Substantials are the beginnings of materials, 328. Natural things, which are material, cannot enter into spiritual things, which are substantial. 328, Material things originate in substantial, 207. MATERIAL things derive their origin from things substantial, 207.

Helena died in Rome in 326 or 328, and most of the records agree that she was buried there and translated to Rheims in 849; but the Venetians decline to have anything to do with so foolish a story. It is their belief that the saint, whom Paul Veronese painted so beautifully, seeing the cross in a vision, as visitors to our National Gallery know, was buried on their green island.

Grant stigmatizes this as "cruel and harsh treatment ... unnecessarily ... inflicted," Mem. ii. 534, and as "infamous," Badeau, Milit. Hist. of Grant, iii. 636 n. Sherman, Memoirs, ii. 328. The admiral says that, if Lincoln had lived, he "would have shouldered all the responsibility" for Sherman's action, and Secretary Stanton would have "issued no false telegraphic dispatches."
