Moore and Reid would have purchased his interest for $157,000,000; when Rockefeller came along the price had risen to $250,000,000; when the oil man shook his head and retired, Carnegie immediately raised his price to $500,000,000.
As to when this may be, we can judge by the past and the present; as to when it will be, if ever, depends much on whether we maintain the Union. Several of our States are already above the average of Europe 73 1/3 to the square mile. Massachusetts has 157; Rhode Island, 133; Connecticut, 99; New York and New Jersey, each 80.
Two thirds of his life were over, and a name which was to sound throughout the world and be remembered through all ages had as yet been scarcely heard of beyond the army and the political clubs in Rome. He was born at Arpinum, a Latin township, seventy miles from the capital, in the year 157. His father was a small farmer, and he was himself bred to the plough.
Was I, too, to dine at his cafe because he had spoken the word? I made my way to number 157 precisely at half-past seven. Felicia was waiting for me, and for a moment I forgot to ask any questions, forgot everything except the pleasure of looking at her.
Lincoln was elected. But Douglas was not dishonored. He had achieved a great personal triumph. He had polled 1,357,157 votes in the country against Lincoln's 1,866,452. In Illinois he had polled 160,215 votes to Lincoln's 172,161 in spite of New England and the Germans. He had received 163,525 votes from the South against Lincoln's 26,430.
The price of corn during this reign, and that of the other necessaries of life, was no lower, or was rather higher, than at present. The finer manufactures, too, by the progress of arts and industry, have rather diminished in price, notwithstanding the great increase of money. * Rymer, tom. xvii. p. 526. To the same purpose, see also 21st lac vi. cap. 28. Rymer, tom. xx. p. 157.
v D'Ewes p. 156, 157. The chief objection which he mentioned, was the sign of the cross in baptism. Religion was a point of which Elizabeth was, if possible, still more jealous than of matters of state. One Pistor opposed these remonstrances of the courtiers. These questions, he added, concern the salvation of souls, and interest every one more deeply than the monarchy of the whole world.
Such is the simple and probable account of the discovery of Madeira in Purchas. Clarke has chosen to embellish it with a variety of very extraordinary circumstances, which being utterly unworthy of credit, we do not think necessary to be inserted in this place. See Progress of Maritime Discovery, I. 157.
She invents nothing and she magnifies nothing; her narrative is as plain and unvarnished as a ship's log-book. She was 157 feet in length, with an extreme breadth of twenty-seven and a-half feet. Belonging to a wealthy English gentleman, she was richly appointed, and fitted up with a luxurious splendour which would have driven wild with envy and admiration the earlier circumnavigators.
