I have never heard of sausages on a sledge journey; it must be something quite new. The pieces of pemmican are cylindrical in shape, about 2 inches high and 4 and 3/4 inches in diameter; when they are packed, there will be large star-shaped openings between every four of them.
As game was not very plentiful that season in that part of the country, it was decided that they should break camp and go on a great buffalo hunt, which would last for several weeks. While the men went to kill the buffalo the women had to go also to dry and pack the meat and to make pemmican. The buffalo herds were far away, and so it was many days' journey before they were found.
"Any other officers?" "No." Then he repeated, absently, "The tent is down." "Who are you?" "Long." Before this colloquy was over Lowe and Norman had started up the hill. Hastily filling his pockets with bread, and taking the two cans of pemmican, Colwell told the coxswain to take Long into the cutter, and started after the others with Ash.
The doctor made an inventory of the provisions that were left, and found that the animals had eaten two hundred pounds of pemmican and a hundred and fifty pounds of biscuit; if the travellers continued their journey they would be obliged to put themselves on half-rations. They deliberated about what was to be done under the circumstances.
This soon froze hard, and the mixture that resembled "potted meat," was now ready for use, and would keep for an indefinite time without the least danger of spoiling. Buffalo-beef, moose-meat, or venison of any sort, thus prepared, is called "pemmican," and is more portable in this shape than any other.
When it was daylight, they all rose and hunted. They saw some moose, and, chasing them, killed three. Now, when they were about to eat, the Chief Wolf came along with many of his children, and one wolf said, "Let us make pemmican of those moose"; and every one was glad.
Nothing else remained but to pack their provisions in the smallest bulk possible, and this was done, according to the custom of the country, by making "pemmican." The dry meat was first pounded until it became a powder; it was then put into small skin bags, made for the purpose, and the hot melted fat was poured in and well mixed with it.
In general they comprise the Geological exploration of the coast of Victoria Land. Your party will consist of Debenham, Gran, and Forde, and you will cross the Sound to Butter Point on or about October. You will depart from Butter Point with provision as under: 11 weeks' pemmican. 10 gallons oil. 18 weeks' remainder. 25 lb. cooking fat. and make along the coast to Granite Harbour.
Upon this they made tea, heated pemmican and bannocks, and thawed a jar of preserves Jessie had made the previous summer of service berries and wild raspberries. Before it they dried their moccasins, socks, and leggings. Afterward they separated to make a round of the traps, agreeing to meet an hour and a half later at the place of their dinner camp.
That outward Barrier march will long be remembered, it was so full of life, health, and hope our only sad days came when the ponies were killed, one by one. But hunger soon defeated sentiment, and we grew to relish our pony-meat cooked in the pemmican "hoosh." On November 24 Oates slew poor old "Jehu" by a pistol shot in Latitude 81 degrees 15 minutes this being the first pony to go.
