The three best defined examples measure about 260 x 260, 260 x 280, 275 x 275 ft. Accounts of the Caerwent Excavations, 1899-1910, will be found in Archaeologia, vols. lvii-lxii.

It is, says Fabre, almost like the movement of a machine of which the wheelwork will not act until one has begun to turn the wheel which directs it. J. H. Fabre, Souvenirs entomologiques, Paris, 1879, pp. 275 et seq.

Now if, as is the case with Mars, a planet receives only half the amount of solar heat that we receive, owing to its greater distance from the sun, and if the mean temperature of our earth is 60° F., this is equal to 551° F. on the absolute scale. It would therefore appear very simple to halve this amount and obtain 275.5° F. as the mean temperature of that planet.

The net result of these various measures was to reduce the gold reserve of the Reichsbank by more than half, the figures falling from $575,000,000 to $275,000,000 in September, 1919. It would be possible under the Treaty to take the whole of this latter sum for Reparation purposes. A sum of $25,000,000, $50,000,000, or even $100,000,000 might be taken for a special purpose.
