Is it not senseless and injust," our complainer might go on to say, "to mix up a being, simple, necessary, that has its subsistence in itself, with another being that moves in an eternal whirl, exposed to every chance and change, and becomes the victim of every external necessity?"

In reality, he wished us to see a young lady who had been a habitual complainer from her earliest childhood; whose plants had always died as soon as she bought them, while those belonging to her neighbours had flourished.

'Then he ought to know, or you, sir, as his clerk, should inform him, said I, 'that I am the complainer in this case, and that my complaint ought to be heard before I am subjected to cross-examination. 'Humph hoy what, aye there is something in that, neighbour, said the poor Justice, who, blown about by every wind of doctrine, seemed desirous to attain the sanction of his brother squire.

Whereupon the complainer was wisely silent, but later I heard him asserting, between catches of his breath, and out of his father's hearing: I cheered him as best I could. His sister had saved her day to a happy end, babbling off to bed with the distressing Irene, to whom she would show a book of pictures until sleep shut off her little eyelid.

So far from being all satisfied and all enjoying, she found everybody requiring something they had not, and giving occasion of discontent to the others. Everybody had a part either too long or too short; nobody would attend as they ought; nobody would remember on which side they were to come in; nobody but the complainer would observe any directions.

Why should they have this piece of good fortune more than others? The answer is that it would be very unjust if they knew anything about it, or could enjoy it in any way, but they know nothing whatever about it, and you, the complainer, do profit by their labour, so that it is really you, the complainer, who get the fun, not they, and this should stop your mouth.

A WHINING COMPLAINER. Society, as it is called, is far more apt to pay its dues to the individual than the individual to society. Have you, young man, who are at home whining over the fact that you cannot get into society, done anything to give you a claim to social recognition? Are you able to make any return for social recognition and social privileges? Do you know anything?

That is that installation. Be the same complainer and then quarrel nicely, agree too arrange speaking first and then dismiss the visitor, accept the late arrival of the one who is there to say that he is welcome, disturb the time by not coming to say good-by, that is one way of changing a dismal way.

When one is a Marthy, however, with ambitions and a tireless energy and the persistence of a beaver, and when one listens to vague mutterings for many hard laboring years, one grows accustomed to the complainings and fails to see certain warning symptoms of which even the complainer is only vaguely aware.
