Men think of odd matters in a battle, and it is a scientific certainty that, at the supreme pinch, the subconscious must react. *Felix Adler's Comment* *From The Standard, Oct. 14, 1914.* Apropos of a recent article by Mr.

Only last week Dr. Elliot of the Hudson Guild over in West Twenty-sixth Street told me of his boys' and their fathers' subscribing their savings with the hope of owning the guild house themselves. They had never let go their grip on the idea over there. They are of Felix Adler's flock.

But while I was sick, Adler's things had been sold and scattered, all except a few old letters, and some odds and ends of no value. However, through those letters, I traced out a son of Kruger's, the only relative left. He is a man of thirty now, a shoemaker by trade, and living at No. 14 Konigstrasse, Mannheim widower, with several small children.

Ferriss's death. In any case Bennett had done what was right. For that matter he had been responsible for McPherson's death; but what else had there been to do? Bennett had spoken as he did after a moment's rapid thinking. To Adler's questions as to the manner of the chief engineer's death Bennett had at first given evasive replies.

His mind was set on persuading her. Nor did he question for a moment that for her, as for him, the bond between them was an enduring love that would always be theirs, and would adapt itself to their mutual advantage. The northern wilderness was deeply bred in him. His way took him past Adler's Hotel, and, in a lucid moment, he remembered that Murray was stopping there.

His perfunctory "loans" had gladdened the hands of several minor officials, whose argus eyes had noted the Sunday run of Dr. Adler's many friends. All these dangerous wares were distributed in unlabelled vials, and no witnesses had ever verified the transfer of the felonious knock-out drops.

All the time we've been going to those fool dinners and all that kind of thing, I've been bursting to talk skirts to you. I say, Emma, Adler's designed a new model a full one, of course, but there's something wrong with it. I can't put my finger on the flaw, but " Emma came swiftly over to his chair. "Make a sketch of it, can't you?" she said.

"Just enough loss of blood and following inflammation to leave him as helpless as a lamb in our hands." "I want to take the wolf home," growled McNerney, "and to see him sit in the chair of death. I'll give him no chance to play tricks!" There was little sleep in the old schloss of Adler's Horst on this eventful night.

And I tried to get rid of the fool; but no, he clung to me, imploring me to save him from the assassin. He said 'I have money ten thousand dollars hid away, the fruit of loot and thievery; save me tell me what to do, and you shall have it, every penny. Two-thirds of it is my cousin Adler's; but you can take it all. We hid it when we first came here.

Presently remembering that Ottenburg had encouraged him to study his lesson, he went down to the opera house and bought a libretto. He had even brought his old "Adler's German and English" in his trunk, and after luncheon he settled down in his gilded suite at the Waldorf with a big cigar and the text of "Lohengrin."
