Caesar's "Commentaries," and the "Account of Xenophon's Expedition," are not more studied by military commanders than our novels are by the fair to a different purpose, indeed; for their military maxims teach to conquer, ours to yield. Those inflame the vain and idle love of glory: these inculcate a noble contempt of reputation. The women have greater obligations to our writers than the men.

We would give more to know what Xenophon's soldiers gossiped about round their camp-fires, than for all the particulars of their retreat. Sparta becomes human to us when we think of Agesilaus on his hobby-horse. Finding that those heroic figures romped with their children, we begin for the first time to suspect that they ever really existed as much as Robinson Crusoe.
This would pave the way for the introduction of real courtesy and genuinely good society, such as undoubtedly existed in Athens, Corinth and Rome. If anyone wants to see a good example of what I mean, I should like him to read Xenophon's Banquet. The last argument in defence of knightly honor no doubt is, that, but for its existence, the world awful thought! would be a regular bear-garden.
Xenophon's authority in this work is, it must be admitted, weak, and little trust can be placed in the historical accuracy of his details; but his general statement is both in itself probable, and is also borne out to a considerable extent by other authors.
LYSANDER: the great commander who in 405 B.C. won the battle of Aegospotamos against the Athenians. SARDIS: acc. pl.; -is represents Gk. -εις. CONSAEPTUM AGRUM: 'park'; the phrase is a translation of Xenophon's παραδεισον; this will account for the omission of et before diligenter consitum. DILIGENTER: 'carefully'. PROCERITATES: the plural probably indicates the height of each kind of tree.
Its true gist is better expressed by the word management; and in that old-fashioned sense it forms a significant title for Xenophon's book: management of the household, management of flocks, of servants, of land, of property in general.
He did not know how to converse with one who could not be answered by a play upon words, nor satisfied by an appeal to precedents, or the authority of numbers and of high names. Lord Chesterfield's style of conversation, and that of any of the personages in Xenophon's Cyropaedia, could not be more different, or less compatible, than the simplicity of Miss Montenero and the wit of Lord Mowbray.
