Woosung and Shanghai, situated on the banks of a river which falls into the sea at the entrance of the Yang'tse Kiang, were first captured, and on the 6th of July, 1842, a fleet of nearly 80 sail, including among them the Cornwallis, of 72 guns, Sir William Parker's flag-ship, in five divisions, sailed up the mighty stream on their voyage of 200 miles into the very heart of China.

The expulsion of the Taepings from the Shanghai district and from Ningpo had done something towards the success of this project, but they still held Hangchow and the line of the Yangtsekiang to within ten miles of the entrance of the Woosung River on which Shanghai stands.

Other even queerer craft lay at anchor like ourselves, only further up the harbour, chief amongst them being Chinese junks of every size, from the huge, travelling tea-chest from Woosung or Amoy of three or four thousand tons burthen, down to the "junklet" from the nearer provinces of the Celestial Empire of lesser proportions.

Nothing exciting ever happened along this part of Woosung Road. What he had witnessed it still wasn't quite believable belonged to the water front. Things happened there, for these white sailors were a wild lot.
