That sounds dull but it is most consoling. I had a bath this morning in these rocks that I would not have given up for all the good dinners I ever had at the Waldorf, or the Savoy. It just went up and down my spine and sent thrills all over me. It is most interesting now and all the troubles of the dull days of waiting at Tampa and that awful time on the troopship are over.
"To LUCILLE, Duchesse de SOUSPENNIER. "You will be at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in the main corridor at four o'clock this afternoon." The thin paper shook in Mr. Sabin's fingers. There was no signature, but he fancied that the handwriting was not wholly unfamiliar to him. He looked slowly up towards the cabman. "I am much obliged to you," he said. "This is of interest to me."
At the frequent moments when he appeared to be losing the car, Hambleton reflected that he had its number, which might lead to something. At the Waldorf the car slowed up, and the cab came within a few yards.
One quart of mayonnaise will hold one quart of whipped cream. For light colored salads, as sweetbread and Waldorf, it is well to use the whipped cream slightly colored with a drop of vegetable green. Add to a half pint of mayonnaise dressing a tablespoonful of chopped gherkin, the same of chopped parsley, four chopped olives and a tablespoonful of capers.
In one hand he carried a folded copy of the reward bill, which Blindway had left at the Waldorf Hotel for him, and while he waited the room being empty just then save for an old gentleman who read The Times in a far corner he unfolded and took a surreptitious glance at it, chuckling to himself at the thought of the cupidity which its contents and promises would arouse in the breasts of the many thousands of folk who would read it.
She had posed at the Waldorf as a trained nurse, in that case, and had met him and held him off and outwitted him at every turn. Then he had decided on his "plant." To effect this he had whisked a young Italian with a lacerated thumb up from the City Hospital and sent him in to her as an injured elevator-boy looking for first-aid treatment.
He started at seeing his enemy and began to fear a thousand terrible, indefinite things, knowing how unscrupulous Mershone was. But the Waldorf detective, who seemed friendly with the police sergeant, made a clear, brief statement of the facts he had observed. Mershone denied the accusation; the bruiser denied it; the policeman and the driver of the patrol wagon likewise stolidly denied it.
You were at the Netherlands, and I drove you out several times." "You seem," Mr. Sabin said, "to be a person with some powers of observation. It would pay you very well indeed if you would ascertain from any of your mates at the Waldorf when and with whom the lady in question left that hotel." "I'll have a try, sir," the man answered.
"He is stopping at the Waldorf, with our friends, the English party, but whether as a guest or in a professional capacity, no one has been able to ascertain." "Zounds, man! why did you not give me this information earlier?" "For the good and sufficient reason, Mr. Mainwaring, that I did not learn of the facts myself until within the last two hours.
You never really believed that King stuff, did you?" "Why, yes." "I had no idea it worked so well." Again Miss Demorest smiled crookedly. "No wonder you didn't want to go to the Waldorf with me; I wonder you consented to come here." "Your advance work is great " "I knew the public swallowed it; but I supposed the profession knew press stuff when they saw it.
