I have no doubt that he does, with the humanity and poetry and wisdom that he pours into it the novel of which it has been said that if Shakespeare revisited the globe and asked for a book of our times to read, this would be the volume to offer him, the book more likely than another to convince him at once that literature is still in our midst.

To make the books retain their value, and be an object of desire, it was necessary that the impressions should be slightly within the natural circulation that there should be rather a larger number desirous of obtaining each volume than the number that could be supplied with it. The club effected this by its own natural action.

Even the demand for greater volume and flexibility of currency has been met, though in ways quite different from those proposed by the farmers.*

What most interests Browning, word-painting, narration, action, psychological analysis, or technique of verse? See whether a comparison of his Prospice with Tennyson's Crossing the Bar does not help you to understand Browning's peculiar cast of mind. What qualities in Browning entitle him to be ranked as a great poet? Tennyson. From his 1842 volume, read the poems mentioned on page 556.

The work is dedicated to Goethe, who wrote an almost enthusiastic review of it for the Literary Gazette of Jena. "Every lover or master of musical art," he says, "should have this volume upon his piano." The 'Wunderhorn' was greeted by the German public with extraordinary cordiality. It was in fact an epoch-making work, the pioneer in the new field of German folk poetry.

The war has not altered the views to which I had then come. But it was not really so on either side, and it is deplorable that the two nations knew so little of each other.

An engraving of the Hall and moat, after Stanfield, forms an illustration to the third volume of the 1834 edition of Crabbe. When Crabbe began The Village, it was clearly intended to be, like The Borough later, a picture of Aldeburgh and its inhabitants. Yet not only Parham, but the country about Belvoir crept in before the poem was completed.

In the course of my lectures on Dramatic Poetry, I, in half a score instances, referred my auditors to the precious volume before me Shakespeare and spoke enthusiastically, both in general and with detail of particular beauties, of the plays of Shakespeare, as in all their kinds, and in relation to the purposes of the writer, excellent.

'You can be useful to us in a hundred ways, said Mr Crummles. 'Think what capital bills a man of your education could write for the shop-windows. 'Well, I think I could manage that department, said Nicholas. 'To be sure you could, replied Mr Crummles. "For further particulars see small hand-bills" we might have half a volume in every one of 'em.
