The seven-cylinder 50 horse-power Gnome rotary engine was fitted to the Farman machine the Voisins had fitted an eight-cylinder Antoinette, giving 50 horse-power at 1,100 revolutions per minute, with direct drive to the propeller. Farman reduced the weight of the machine from the 1,450 lbs. of the Voisins to some 1,010 lbs. or thereabouts, and the supporting area to 450 square feet.
When Amelie came to help get tea at the gate, she said that a man from Voisins, who had started with the crowd that left here Wednesday, had returned. He had brought back the news that the sight on the road was simply horrible.
The detachment of the regiment which staggered past my gate camped in the fields below me and in the courtyards at Voisins, and the rest of them made themselves comfortable in the fields at the other side of the hill and the outbuildings on Amelie's place, and the officers and the ambulance corps began to seek their quarters.
But other stars took their place, those of the French Voisins returning from some bombing expedition, their lights dotting the sky like a moving constellation, while at intervals a rocket shot from one or the other who was anxious not to miss the landing-ground. Over Dunkirk, eight or ten searchlights stretched out their long white arms, thrusting and raking to and fro after the enemy machines.
This time the cantonnement does not come up to Huiry only to the foot of the hill at Voisins. Of course I have not seen our boys yet, but I probably shall in a few days. March 28, 1917 Well, all quiet on the hilltop again all the soldiers gone no sign of more coming for the present. We are all nervously watching the advance, but controlling our nerves.
The Voisin was a biplane, constructed with due regard to the designs of Langley, Lilienthal, and other earlier experimenters both the Voisins and M. Colliex, their engineer, studied Lilienthal pretty exhaustively in getting out their design, though their own researches were very thorough as well.
I patiently waited until the voices ceased in Voisins. I could see no smoke anywhere. Amélie came back at once, but she brought no explanation. She only brought a funny story. There is an old woman in Voisins, well on to ninety, called Mère R . The war is too tremendous for her localized mind to grasp. Out of the confusion she picks and clings to certain isolated facts.
"No," he said, "at this moment there is nothing that you can do for me, thank you; but if you could give my boys a cup of tea, I imagine that you would just about save their lives." And nodding to me, he said to the picket, "This lady is kind enough to offer you a cup of tea," and he rode off, taking the road down the hill to Voisins.
Giry, drawing herself up, recited the letter with touching eloquence: MADAM: 1825. Mlle. Menetrier, leader of the ballet, became Marquise de Cussy. Mlle. Marie Taglioni, a dancer, became Comtesse Gilbert des Voisins. La Sota, a dancer, married a brother of the King of Spain. Lola Montes, a dancer, became the morganatic wife of King Louis of Bavaria and was created Countess of Landsfeld. Mlle.
So the Aspirant settled into an armchair in front of the fire having asked my permission to chat a bit, and account for himself, and it was evident to me that he had already been asking questions regarding me spurred, as usual, by the surprise of finding an American here. As the officers' mess is at the foot of the hill, at Voisins, that had been easy.
