How much of this is true, God knows, but it is common talk. After dinner I did reckon with Mrs. Sarah for what we have eat and drank here, and gave her a crown, and so took coach, and to the Duke's House, where we saw "The Villaine" again; and the more I see it, the more I am offended at my first undervaluing the play, it being very good and pleasant, and yet a true and allowable tragedy.
And by and by up to the Duke, who was making himself ready; and there among other discourse young Killigrew did so commend "The Villaine," a new play made by Tom Porter; and acted only on Saturday at the Duke's house, as if there never had been any such play come upon the stage. The same yesterday was told me by Captain Ferrers; and this morning afterwards by Dr. Clerke, who saw it.
But Sir G. Downing would not be answered so: though all the world takes notice of him for a most ungrateful villaine for his pains. 21st.
That I might be in that unborne againe, sir. Fer. No, Eleonora, that I were so ennabled With my owne hands to worke out thy wronge Upon that wretch, that villaine, oh, that Ravisher! But, though my hands are palsyed with rage, The Law yet weares a sword in our defence. Enter Henrico. Ele.
Whereupon it is growne to a common prouerb, He giue him the Neapolitan shrug, when one meanes to play the villaine, and makes no boast of it.

Looke on the prisoner: doe you know him, Lady? Ele. Would I had nere had cause to say I know him. Mac. Of what doe you accuse him? Ele. As the murtherer Both of my name and honour. Hen. False! Fer. Hen.
Fer. Dost thou delight To heare it named, villaine, th'hast ravisht her. Hen. I am enough abusd, & now 'tis time To speake a litle for my selfe, my Lord. By all the vowes, the oathes & imprecations That ere were made, studied, or practised, As I have a soule, as she & you have soules, I doe not know, nor can, nor will confesse Any such thing, for all your Circumventions: Ile answer all by Law.
Freind, I was looking for you. Y. M. And you have found me, Villaine. Thu. What meane you? Y. M. If thou darst follow me I will conduct thee Unto the seate of death. Thu. Dare! Ile goe with thee, hand in hand; goe on. Alex. Goe, goe to and goe to, I say and I sait; here wilbe some revenge. Now, if her sonn be slayne, heres then this purse of gold and this rich Jewell which she sent to him.
Man. Some villaine hath filld up a Cup of poyson T'infect the whole house of the Guzman family; And you are greedyest first to take it downe. Pedro. That villaine is thy brother. Man.
Hater home with me to dinner, and instantly back again to write what letters I had to write, that I might go abroad with my wife, who was not well, only to jumble her, and so to the Duke of York's playhouse; but there Betterton not being yet well, we would not stay, though since I hear that Smith do act his part in "The Villaine," which was then acted, as well or better than he, which I do not believe; but to Charing Cross, there to see Polichinelli.
