I really never knew just who Garibaldi was until I read Trevelyan's three books on the Resorgimento last winter, and those I perused because I had taken a motor trip through Italy the summer before. I know practically nothing of Spanish history, and my mind is a blank as to Russia, Poland, Turkey, Sweden, Germany, Austria, and Holland.
Saintsbury's A History of English Literature in the Nineteenth Century. Kennedy's English Literature, 1880-1905. Walker's Greater Victorian Poets. Brownell's Victorian Prose Masters. Payne's The Greater English Poets of the Nineteenth Century. Perry's A Study of Prose Fiction. Benson's Rossetti. Noyes's William Morris. Trevelyan's Life and Letters of Macaulay. Morrison's Macaulay. Barry's Newman.
"Writings of Washington," iii, 491. "Writings of Washington," iii, 23. Lodge's "Washington," i, 138. Trevelyan's "Revolution," Part 1, 378, footnote. Both of these books quote Swett's "History of Bunker Hill Battle." "Writings of Washington," iii, 491. "Writings of Washington," iii, 22. Ibid., iii, 71.
Captain Trevelyan's return was now to be associated with new and varied interest in the interior and exterior management of this pleasant home. Fanny Trevelyan was cheered by the hope of her brother's presence. Company would now be entertained in a manner creditable to the former hospitality which distinguished the Trevelyans.
And so it was settled among them that Nora Rowley should find a home at Monkhams, if a home in England should be wanted for her. It wanted but four days to that fixed for the marriage at Florence, and but six to that on which the Rowleys were to leave Italy for England, when Mr. Glascock received Trevelyan's letter.
Trevelyan's speech, indeed, was sad enough, but Mr. Glascock could not take up questions of the worship of Bacchus at half a minute's warning. He eat a morsel, and raised his glass to his lips, and felt himself to be very uncomfortable. It was necessary, however, that he should utter a word. "Do you not let your little boy come in to breakfast?" he said.
Bideawhile and to Lady Milborough, and to Stanbury, for Trevelyan's address; but was told by each of them that nothing was known of his whereabouts. She did not apply to Mr. Bozzle, although Mr. Bozzle was more than once in her neighbourhood; but as yet she knew nothing of Mr. Bozzle. The replies from Mr.
"You must remember, Mrs. Trevelyan, that she has taken upon herself much also in the way of kindness, in doing what perhaps I ought to call charity. I wonder what I should have been doing now if it were not for my Aunt Stanbury." He took his leave, and went at once from Curzon Street to Trevelyan's club, and found that Trevelyan had not been there as yet.
From this alone arose the full confidence alike reposed in each. Mary Douglas was even more beautiful than Lady Rosamond. Her features were formed as regularly as a model of an Angelo; her expression might be a life-long study for a DaVinci, a Rubens, or a Reynolds. Yet such beauty had not power to fan anew the smouldering fire which consumed the vitality of Lieutenant Trevelyan's existence.
Trevelyan's, who has, for his own purposes, been in Blessington's rooms?" I saw in the gaslight that Holmes wore an amused smile at this brilliant departure of mine. "My dear fellow," said he, "it was one of the first solutions which occurred to me, but I was soon able to corroborate the doctor's tale.
