If by dying to-morrow, to-night, this minute, you could know what it was, you would be glad to die. Wouldn't you? The world was built up in Space and Time. Time and Space were forms of thought ways of thinking. If there was thinking there would be a thinker. Supposing supposing the Transcendental Ego was the Thing-in-itself? That was his idea. She was content to let him have the best ones.

They thought that if they could once show how metaphysical ideas are made they would discredit those ideas and banish them for ever from the world. If they retained confidence in any notion as Hobbes in body, Locke in matter and in God, Berkeley in spirits, and Kant, the inheritor of this malicious psychology, in the thing-in-itself and in heaven it was merely by inadvertence or want of courage.

But your individuality is not your true and inmost being: it is only the outward manifestation of it. It is not the thing-in-itself, but only the phenomenon presented in the form of time; and therefore with a beginning and an end. But your real being knows neither time, nor beginning, nor end, nor yet the limits of any given individual.

We do not wish a meal to owe its relish solely to the influence of extreme hunger it must have a beautiful nature all its own, it must exhibit the idea of Thing-in-Itself in an easily assimilable form. Good dinners certainly do not, and I end with this couplet: A douce woman and a fu' wame Maks King and cottar bide at hame.

In other words, experience is only a phenomenon; it is not knowledge of the thing-in-itself.

All genuine merit, moral as well as intellectual, is not merely physical or empirical in its origin, but metaphysical; that is to say, it is given a priori and not a posteriori; in other words, it lies innate and is not acquired, and therefore its source is not a mere phenomenon, but the thing-in-itself.

Physics can speak of mass and weight and avoid all reference to Matter; but there always is, in scientific reasoning, an implicit reference to Reality, and it facilitates, therefore, the expression of scientific reasoning, when the account of a physical process is stated with reference to a supposed reality, such as Matter. And in making such reference Science is thinking of the thing-in-itself.

Will, as the thing-in-itself, is the foundation of all being; it is part and parcel of every creature, and the permanent element in everything. Will, then, is that which we possess in common with all men, nay, with all animals, and even with lower forms of existence; and in so far we are akin to everything so far, that is, as everything is filled to overflowing with will.

And then commotion; as if the infinite stillness, the immovable Substance, had got up and begun moving Rhythm of eternity: the same for ever: for ever different: for ever the same. Thought was the Thing-in-itself. This man was saying, over and over and all the time what you had wanted Kant to say, what he wouldn't say, what you couldn't squeeze out of him, however you turned and twisted him.

It amounts to this, that by what we do we know what we are, and by what we suffer we know what we deserve. Further, it follows from this that a man's individuality does not rest upon the principle of individuation alone, and therefore is not altogether phenomenal in its nature. On the contrary, it has its roots in the thing-in-itself, in the will which is the essence of each individual.
